"COLONEL DICKSON ILLUSTRATES THE MARINES' HYMN
1929---1931

Four of the superb paintings that Lt. Col. Donald Dickson used to illustrate the Marines' Hymn, are pictured below. Besides the China Marines and their unusual cold weather caps, Dickson also pictured marines guarding the US Mail, and Civil War Marines fighting their country's battles in 1865 at Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Donald L. Dickson was the editor of Leatherneck Magazine. During the Second World War a poem titled That Marine was penned by PFC Paul Wilson that catches in words what Col. Dickson expressed with his art. The following is the last verse: "Now I'm a member of that Corps, A fact I'm proud to claim; Its annals have a glory, They're studded thick with fame; But keep your fame and glory, As strange as it may seem; I simply want the title, That United States Marine."
