Some observations regarding this year’s Greggy Awards…

My five nominees for best picture were:
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
The Wolf of Wall Street
The World’s End

Other Contending Lead Performances:
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Wolf of Wall Street
Christian Bale – American Hustle
Tom Hanks – Captain Phillips
Simon Pegg – The World’s End

My other favorite scores:
Jack the Giant Slayer – John Ottman
The Croods – Alan Silvestri
Thor: The Dark World – Brian Tyler
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – Howard Shore

Composer of the year was Brian Tyler with very good scores to Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and a pretty decent one to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. (EDIT: Forgot to also mention his outstanding score to Now You See Me!)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was a strong contender for production design.

The Hobbit was also considered for visual effects along with Pacific Rim. The Lone Ranger also deserves a shout out in this category.

The Wolverine and Gravity were strong contenders for both sound awards. Start Trek Into Darkness was considered for sound editing.

Evil Dead was in the running for makeup. American Hustle was also considered.

And finally, despite seeing a couple of the lowest rated films of the year (The Lone Ranger, After Earth), the Rotten Greggy Award goes to Zack Snyder’s pitiful Man of Steel. Congrats, Zack!
