Apparently, Hyperkin is working on an Atari 2600 clone console called the Retron 77. Now, I don't know what in the world happened to their planned X86/MS-DOS box. So, until we actually see something, don't get your hopes up too much.

The Retron 77, if the rumors are true, will actually have a cartridge slot and will come with one 'classic-style' controller.

Looks like Hyperkin has showed off the Retron 77 at E3.. So far haven't seen any in-action videos of it, but maybe they're on youtube by now or will be soon.

So, some people are already complaining that the Retron 77's 'inability' to play games at a 4:3 aspect ratio, as well as not adding support for 7800 games, which would use a similar cartridge slot that is BC with 2600 games, are issues with wanting to buy this Atari 2600 clone console. Of course, there are still people complaining that they pre-ordered a Retron HD way before anyone else and still have yet to get their consoles.

Hyperkin sucks when it comes to rolling out new consoles, where certain people tend to get their consoles on time, and people that may pre-order or late order their consoles may could get them way before people who came early. They need to get their 'stuff' together, for sure..

As for the aspect ratio, I have no doubt that they could easily make it switchable from 16:9 to 4:3 before it hits store shelves. If it can be updated through firmware, then it should be an easy fix.

As for 7800 support, they obviously already have a 2600-style (1 button) joystick planned for the system, but that doesn't mean they should forego 7800 game support. The fact is, both the original 2600 controllers and the North-American 7800 controllers were terrible, with the possible exception of the heavy sixer controller, which used arcade-style buttons and joystick, even though it looked exactly the same as the later joystick.

Who is the target audience? This is for people who want to play original cartridges on modern televisions. If you want emulation, it's easy enough to find, and if you have an HTPC (PC connected to TV) then you probably don't need this.

Some people have complained about this not supporting 5200 cartridges. Look at a 5200 controller, with its analog joystick and all of the keypad buttons. That's like saying that it should support coleco or intellivision, which isn't a bad idea, but you have to have controller designs to bring to market for those things. So, it's not viable for something this far in.

I believe this is suppose to be released during the holidays. Take that with a grain of salt, because of many of Hyperkin's previous release dates, and as I've said, not everyone that ordered a Retron HD has even got theirs yet. Maybe by Q3 of 2018, it'll be a bit easier to find.

I'd go instead with a flashback type rerelease with enough games, good sound and video, and Atari licensing so it's not a cheap knock off like the atgames Genesis.was.

So, now that I've seen a video from Hyperkin about this, what they shown is actually just a prototype, with many of the switches and features not on the prototype. This is apparently emulation based on the Stella Atari 2600 emulator. They're going to ship it with a classic controller, but even Hyperkin says that they have issues with the controllers the manufacturer has put out and that they're considering releasing it with a second controller, probably one that's easier to use. Hopefully it'll be a gamepad instead.

There will apparently be an aspect ratio switch, a black and white/color switch, a difficulty, and game mode switch as well, like the the original 2600. They are also considering adding save states. The console is also hot swappable, with the cartridges, and it does not dump the cartridge roms to the system to play. It plays from the cartridge directly.

So, all of this stuff sounds pretty good.. Not sure what price it's going to be..

Sounds good to me. Though I would like to see full compatibility. I assume this is only to play 2600 titles.
