My first apple, of my sixteen or so varieties of apple trees. This is just one that formed a week ago or so, and there are a few more on the tree, probably a few more to come. Since the apple itself is small, the pic is somewhat blurry, but let's hope it makes it to maturity!

I would have had apples at least two or three years back if my golden dorsett apple would have done well, but it's just been somewhat sickly. So, this 'Anna' apple apparently either pollinated itself or some bee traveled a couple miles from another apple tree to pollinate it.

'Anna' apples are considered semi self-fertile, but up until now, even though it has flowered profusely over the last few years, it hadn't had any fruit. So, I don't know what to think of it.

Within the next two or three years, many of my other apples should start blooming, and we should have hundreds of apples each year. This year, I'll be happy to settle with somewhere between 5 and 15 lol.

Apple trees generally take between four and five years to produce once planted in the ground, although dwarf varieties may fruit sooner, and standard varieties even longer. Most stock you buy is semi-dwarf, meaning it uses a rootstock that doesn't grow very large, around 15' or so. I think what seems to determine how big the top grows is actually how large/long the root system will actually grow. Dwarf rootstock probably grows less than 8', semi-dwarf, around 15', and standard upward to 45'. The length til root establishment seems to be like what you have to wait for until the top portion of tree tree is ready to bloom in the ground.
