Yes Joel Ward signed to PTO.

Not sure what to make of this.
37 years old.

So much for playing the youth.

PTOs are sometimes to round out rosters for pre-season games.

I hope we don't sign him for the regular season. Making our young guys compete for a roster spot makes some sense, but if Ward makes it over Scherbak, Hudon, etc that's a bad thing.

Hmm..

5 Or 6 years ago I'd have welcomed him. He always seemed gritty to me. A nose for the net.

An undrafted player that has carved out a pretty good career. Definetly a cool story.

Habs also have dman Simon Despres on a PTO. There are 35 players
on PTOs this pre-season on 14 teams as per Cap Friendly. The only
player to make The Habs on a PTO that I recall is Tomas Fleischmann
later traded to Chicago with Dale Weiss for Philip Dandault and a second
round pick..

I heard Després has or had lots of issues. Health (concussion). And other. Not sure what the “other” is.

I could see Despres as a 7th D or in Laval to help the youth but I really can't understand Ward at all. What can he bring at this point in his career that Deslaurier, McCarron or Shaw can't do???

Just don't hate the player gang!

....this farce is Bergevins doing.

Good luck to Joel Ward.

Big Brew, a lot of PTOs are because NHL teams want to have two full rosters for exhibition games (and there are rules about minimum numbers of NHL players in each exhibition game). I don't think that Ward is here to genuinely make the team. He's here so that we have enough NHL players to spread over two teams.

The benefit to Ward is that he gets to show himself off to all the other teams. Some teams around the league will either suffer injuries or realize that their young guys aren't ready for the NHL, and if Ward has a strong pre-season, somebody will give him a contract.

We're basically using each other. It's possible that Julien falls in love with him, but in reality, there's very little chance that he plays for us this year.

This is a non issue

He is here as an experienced vet to be an example around the kids and play in a few exhibition games.

Even if he made the team as a 13-14 F, so what? Better him sitting in press row every night than a kid who could be getting quality minutes in Laval. This year is not about winning.
