Does anyone know exactly where Kenshin was born and spent his early childhood? I had thought it was in Chosuu since he joined the Chosuu Ishin Shishi. However, since Hiko found him at age seven near Kyoto, perhaps his birthplace is more in the realm of Kyoto? Does Watsuki ever mention exactly where his place of birth is?

Hmmm.. I always assumed he was born in Kyoto. I'm not certain if Watsuki ever mentioned his birthplace... I'll do some research and edit this post later...

Edit: I've been searching for hours and I haven't found anything... I tried googling it aswell but most sites don't even have accurate info on his birthdate. Sorry... :(

Perhaps posters at other forums such as Animenation or The-Oro.com may know the answer...

Yes, I've been searching for all this time and I haven't found anything. So I decided to ask someone who might.

Thanks to Suiko Eiji from AN:

I'll have to double-check the Hiden and Kaden when I get home from work tonight however, I don't think they indicate a place of birth. Using Tsuioku-hen as a reference, Himura joined the Kiheitai and then was brought into the inner ranks of the Choshuu Hanshi by Katsura Kogoro upon his inspection of the Kiheitai and a visit to Takasugi Shinsaku. The Kiheitai, while formed in Choshuu-han and formed by Choshuu Hanshi, was open to anyone who believed in the Sonnou Joi movement.

Predating that, the earliest we see of Shinta (Kenshin) is after he was sold into a brothel after his parents died, and he has the encounter with the bandits and Hiko, so we can presume he is from an area around Kyoto, but this is all speculation at best.

Hey all, I had a break from studying and checked out the Kenshin Hiden and Kenshin Kaden for this information.

On Kenshin's record, it does not indicate an exact place of birth, but here is the following entry:

So, unless there is a contradiction directly from the manga, we can accept that Watsuki never planned to give it too much detail. Since Kansai is mentioned (as opposed to leaving it completely unknown) we can make the estimation that Kenshin was born somewhere along the lines of the modern prefectures of Nara, Wakayama, Mie, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, and Shiga.

Here is a map with the Kansai region highlighted, courtesey of Wikipedia.

OK so if Kenshin is from the Kansai area, how did he get down to Choshuu to join the Kiheitai? People weren't allowed to leave their birthplace back then unless they had special documents. I highly doubt Kenshin would've qualified for one. Of course he could've snuck through...

Yeah, sneacking through seems to be the only answer available. There is very little information about Kenshin's childhood before he met Hiko. Even his training with Hiko is devoid of much info.

I must say I'm a tad disappointed with Watsuki leaving out most of Kenshin's childhood. But just as Suiko said, compared to the background of the other characters, Kenshin had the most development despite this lack of info.
