Dell, the world's third-largest computer company, has purchased property in
Quincy that could become the site of the Columbia Basin town's newest data
center, the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reported this morning.

Underway for months, the top-secret purchase — known as Project Roosevelt
— would add the computer manufacturer to Quincy's list of tech industry
standouts, such as Microsoft and Yahoo.

Dell paid $3.6 million for the property, owned by S. Michael and Marsha A.
Rodgers. It's located near the Microsoft data center in agricultural fields north
of downtown, according to Pat Boss, business affairs consultant for the Port of

Boss confirmed that paperwork for the purchase was signed two days ago after
an exhaustive, six-month site location process across several western states.

Grant County and Quincy city officials knew a big California or Texas company
was on its way, said Boss, but didn't get full details — including the company's
name — until just a few days ago.

Dell was attracted to Quincy, said Boss, by Grant County's cheap electricity
and expanded tax incentives for data centers in rural counties set by the
legislature in March.

"There's no doubt those incentives cleared the way for
Dell and will likely do so for other companies," Boss said.

Other details of the land purchase and Dell's plans for the
property will likely be available in coming days, he added.
