To replace the seal around the shifter shaft on a C4, how far do I have to tear down the tranny? Do I have to take out more than the valve body? I have a manual but it is not exactly clear.

Remove the VB.
There is a 15/16" nut inside that holds the lever in.
The 1/2" nut on the outside must be removed first.

Thanks. Another question: Is there an easy way to get the front seal out with the shaft still in the tranny?

Front seal?
Do you mean the pump seal or outer manual shaft seal?
The shaft must be removed to replace the manual seal and the transmission must be removed to replace the front seal.

I meant the pump seal. I pried it out with a short screwdriver and then put the new seal in with a piece of pipe about 2 1/2 inch. My last hurdle is the rear seal (output shaft) and the bushing. I got a new bushing and slipped it on the drivshaft yoke and it seems to have as much play in it as the one that is in my tailshaft housing. How tight should it fit? Could my yoke be worn?
