Is it possible to change a 9 inch

open centre to a LSD or are they two totally different castings?
I don't want to change the whole diff centre, just the guts.

If you want the 9 inch to spin both wheels that is possible by putting a mini spool in it. Not sure what LSD stands for.

The castings are different.Mini spool will only work in a single trac unit,but is a pain to drive in the street. LSD is cast and clearanced different to fit in the (posi/lsd)clutch setup.

So the housings are different.. My only option is to buy another centre.
Whats the recommendation, to buy a new one or second hand? Are they available?

Jim - the posi differential is available either new (from Ford and others, ~$375) or used on Ebay or locally. Used posi's go for anywhere from $160-$220. Clutches will run you $60.

No matter what, you'll need bearings and will have to re-setup the clearances...

I have my old Ford hotrod truck from my 20's still and if my memory is correct the trucks used 31 splined axles and the cars used 28 splined axles. I would research or pull an axle before I baught any parts for your 9"; it is probably a 28 spline axle though.
The ford 9" used to be the choice of hotrodders because it is the toughest differential ford built ( but the carriers have different castings and are important also). I have always gotten consistent double tire burnouts with my truck wich has a modified 460 in it, I have a limited-slip differential also. A spool is mostly used by serious drag-racers and 4x4 drivers because it is just a solid gear holder that locks the axles together, on the street it will chew the heck out of your tires in no time flat.
