i bought a crippled truck at a flying J a week ago with a broken steering column from vandalism and attempted theft of the vehicle. i put a used steering column in it and now it runs. it runs decent and i drove it home yesterday about 10 miles or so. the transmission is good and shifts fine with no issues and motor seems to have plenty of power. truck has a 391 rear end in it. the overdrive doesn't engage. the wiring is suspect and i called gear vendors customer service and he told me how to how wire the solenoid with a toggle switch to see if it is good by passing all the wiring and dimmer switch. what i want to do is make sure transmission and overdrive are functioning well and install behind a FE gasoline engine or a 385 series stroker in a shortbed pickup. will the guts out of a 88 7.3 diesel C6 install in the case from a 460 or 428 C6. thanks.

i am closer to making a decision in parting out this 7.3 diesel. the 7.3 has a cast iron case c6. i have never seen one before and  the inspection plate is different with the torque converter more exposed. i am just trying to verify that the guts from the cast iron cased diesel c6 will fit in an aluminum cased gasoline c6 from a car or truck from either a 385 series ford or FE c6. if the  guts will swap for sure i will pull the transmission and OD and sell the diesel engine and scrap the rest. if the transmission is not usable for other than that 7.3 i will leave it in the truck, pull the OD and find a replacement tailhousing and get a longer driveshaft and put the truck back together. thanks in advance.

p.s. the diesel has an "N" servo cover. runs decent now and the Gear Vendors Overdrive is working now using  a dimmer switch. and the transmission is good

after some advice i tried a magnet on the transmssion case and it is aluminum. i would have bet it was cast iron. the diesel fuel and stains on the transmission sure made it look like cast iron but it is aluminum. oops my bad. thanks.
