A couple of odd questions

Hi Skip,

Not really entirely related to ships, but not sure where else to put it.

With regard to carriers, how does the sim mark parking spots? I’ve looked at a bunch of .cfg files and it’s not obvious.

Secondly, have you considered an animated figure as the LSO, of course, he would be a bugger to see, but would be a neat thing.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

The sim doesn't actually recognise parking spots on ships, what are you trying to change?

I think at least one of the Victorious models has an LSO, to animate him you need a couple of the gauges from the Swordfish. I'm fairly sure it comes with instructions on adding them to other aircraft...

Hi Skip,

parking spots - yes, I had figured that out since posting. I'm working on this idea for the Virtual Airforce concept - so you can park your airplane on the deck, then come back three days later and load the sim, with your plane in the right spot.

I've got a plan for achieving that, and working through it at the moment - discord channel has more detail. Basically we're setting up a persistent world on a server.

Animated figures - Andy and I were wondering if you could set up a figure to give directions to helicopters during RAS - I guess it's a matter of defining the location of the drop point, and then programming animations that relate to the position of the helo / load to the drop point.

I now have a way to have cargo spawn as a slung load in places it needs to be. Need to figure out the interface with the helo controller. Then make or acquire a suitable figure and animate it properly.

Is the LSO guage 64 bit compatible?

The way the persistent world works, by the way, includes failures on ships which generate part requests which spawn cargo at Pompey (for example). That cargo needs to get to the ship before the failure can be fixed. This stuff is already working and stable - but nobody really knows about it.

Mind blown? :)

That's possible, essentially you need to define where the drop point is, you'll then need a gauge to drive the animations. It's essentially what the RFN gauge does to drive non-standard FLOLS sites. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible to code animations to do it as there's no obvious way of getting another objects position in the animation coding, you have to let the gauge change a variable that the animation uses.
With P3D it should be possible to code a gauge that knows where the cargo is and places a marshaller near it, and another one near where you want it on the ship, and then animates them according to your position.

It should be as it's an XML gauge, I haven't tested it myself but I know one of the testers for the MilViz Corsair used it and that's P3D4 only as I understand it.

Mind blown?

Slightly! And now wondering how to code a gauge to place a marshaller. And if I could have an extra day in the week...

Also, don’t need a figure - can be done with light signals. Not sure about the historical procedure though. Hmmm.
