Prince of Persia also has a crappy ending, at least the NES version does.

"Ikari Warriors' ending is just a screen of text, but at least it says a bit more than just "Congratulations". But it's still a waste considering what you have to go through to get to the end of that game. "

I think the problem is that it's hard to top the dead guy in the chair. In fact, a lot of people assume the game ends right there. Maybe it's because it's difficult to find the hidden staircase to the next level without someone telling you about it, or maybe it's just that once you've seen that, there's nothing else to see.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the ending to Blue's quest was meant as a joke of some kind. Like what if Square got to thinking about how a lot of early action games just ended with "Congratulations!" or "The End", and wondered if it would be funny for a game with an actual storyline to end that way. And for that matter, why does a screen of credits roll after you beat (or lose to) Rouge?

Is Prince of Persia really that bad? Granted, I haven't played much of it myself (hence my asking), but it seemed kinda like the Oddworld games on PSX, and I liked what I played of those. Actually, I think Prince of Persia was possibly the first of those "puzzle platformer" kind of games.

I think A Boy and His Blob came before Prince of Persia...

Apparently somebody made a Splatterhouse game for Famicom (Japanese NES).  OK game, but the ending sucks.  The entire game was just a film shooting, and caused all evil to actually spill out into the real world.
