If it's a popsicle purple with a 394 frame and engine number prefix then it was launched in the UK in August 1973 and was available until 1976, when replaced by the Kenny Roberts speedblock DX and Drum brake models. The frame numbers for the UK model started at 394 - 18000 up to 40000 so you can work out if it was an early one or later one from there.

Yamaha Motors UK in Weybridge, Surrey will give you an age certificate letter for a small fee now I believe. They will only tell you the year of manufacture however and not down to the month. DVLA will then decide what reg No suffix you will get.

Try also the vjmc (Vintage Japanese Motor Club) - http://www.vjmc.com/, they can sometimes also help.

I have two purple fizzies, frame number 394-24*** registered September 1974 and frame number 394-26*** registered May 1975.
My newest Candy orange SS badged FS1-E frame number 394-10*** was first registered in December 1973.
Your bike is likely to have been manufactured in 1973, but may not have been registered until 1974, either way it would most likely be on an M plate.
Hope this helps.

If you get your fizzy painted through me I have a guy who specialises in painting YAMAHA FS1-e's. We can get all the right colours and and the best quality tank and side panel decals as well.

The price is £300 for a complete set of tin for the early fizzys (tank, 2 x side panels, 2 x headlight light bracket, headlight bowl, and 2 x shock shrouds). The price includes all preparation work and laquering and a full set of decals (2 x white tank stripes and 2 x side panel (SS or FS1-E type). It also includeds postage and packing to return the items back to you when done.

£250 all in for the Kenny Roberts DX or Baja models.

You won't be disappointed!!

Specials can also be done. Please contact me for further details
