My buddy Gary and I took a 2 day trip to Chautauqua.  He usually goes for the week with the group that goes, but could only go a couple days this year.  So he sent me the invite too.  How could I turn it down?  We drove up Monday night and fished sun up to sun down on Tuesday and about half the day Wednesday.  Tuesday was a good day.  We got on the smallies right away and it never stopped.  Non stop topwater action all day.  We ended up with a boat load of them.  The average was 3-3/12 lbs.  I got my personal best at 4.1 lbs and later broke that with a 5.4 lb. smallie.  That pig looked like a tank coming up and hitting that topwater!  Gary's biggest came in at 4 lbs.  Now these guys are telling me that it was slow compared to what they're used to this time of year.  The grass is up thick and the water temp is already 77.  They say once the grass is up the smallie action slows down.  If Tuesday was slow I'd like to be here when it's 'normal'!!  We're guessing our best 5 Tuesday would've went 21-22 lbs.  We got back at it Wednesday morning and the smallie bite was few and far between.  And the size went down.  We decided to start throwing frogs in the slop for largemouth, which payed off.  We found some decent ones, but no giants.  We met up with the group at noon for lunch and called it a day, as Gary and I had to be at work today.  One of the guys in the group caught a 7 1/2 lb smallie on Monday.  I wish I had the pic to share.  This is one sweet lake and I look forward to coming back in the future.  I'll probably try and come a couple weeks earlier than they did though.

Wow!  Great trip.  It's a good thing you didn't get spoiled by fishing it when it's 'normal'.

That is one pretty lake from memory.  My parents vacationed there twice.

You all had an excellent outing and what a great surprise to get that invitation.

What an awesome lake.  I hope Marty has a chance to see this given it's his home state.

I didn't place where this lake was when I first read your post even though the name was familiar to me.  But then Rick just posted it asking Marty about it and I realized I've driven on the bridge over this lake 20 or 30 times on our trips to New York.  I've stopped at the scenic overlook just last year and got a good view of the south end.  Every trip I crane my neck looking into the clear water and wishing I could fish it.  This report hasn't helped that wish and maybe added it to the bucket list.  I hope you make it back there soon so I can hear more about it.

Kevin...I've been wanting to go there for years.  It's a world class fishery.  I don't know if you follow Major League Fishing, but they were there for their inaugural season a few years. back.  If you ever go there for the smallies, you need to get there in the spring.  No later than mid June.

Jim,  I'm going to be talking to you more about this lake this week.  I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it.
