I've never had a mantis but we have praying mantises outside. They are really neat insects!

Can you really buy mantises in a local pet shop? I would love to find one, my students have been studying them, and just LOVE this insect... it has been one of their favorite to study, but one of the only insects, that we've studied, that we haven't actually seen upclose/in the classroom... that and the walking stick...

I've never seen a mantis for sale in a pet shop. I suspect where they do sell them, they are selling exotic tropical species and not the US native praying mantis. I don't know if there are laws governing collection of wild praying mantids but around here, they are easy to find.
