Do you believe that any situation can be overcome by sheer will?

For example, if a man who was running a race was determined not to lose, would it be possible, with enough willpower, for him to push himself to win even pushing himself beyond his physical capabilities?

I think our will drives us to push beyond what we normally would think is our limit, since really, our only true limit is death.

Strong will can over come all, I know that for a fact, I have chronic stress headaches, that are bad enough for me to miss school, but through force of will I can ignore them 90% of the time. And I believe people with weak wills should not be alowed to do what they wish just because they cant help it.

I believe this to be true, as I can honestly say this the sheer desire to succeed and keep going is what allowed me to overcome some tough obstacles in my life, especially if one considers that I have a mental condition that has given me more obstacles than usual. Desire and determination have kept be going this far, and dammit they're gonna keep me going until I just stop going. I have the will to do what I have to do.

Well, if he is in the race in the first place, I'm sure he'd be determined not to lose. Really though, the same thing applies to everyone else. Whoever is faster/stronger will triumph over the rest. It is survival of the fittest after all. (Pun intended.)

No. :/

In a sense, I agree with Exxy -- determination can push us beyond what we would otherwise think our limits are. When we reach what out actual physical limits are (if we do), though, willpower can't do squat.

Would you think it possible to use will to push oneself past our physical limits? Would it be possible for the runner to push himself past the breaking point of his body so that when he stops at the end of the race he just falls over dead?

Presumably if you managed to push yourself past your physical limits (actually, I think the brain has safeguards against that, but no matter) a bone or something would break and you'd fall over before the end of the race. >_>

If we continue to push ourselves physically we are not hitting our physical limits. Duh.

I'm talking about using will to override those safeguards.

No one can push themselves past their physical limits. That doesn't even make sense.

They are limits, they can't be surpassed. Thats like saying, through will, a person could pass their physical limitations and jump 5000 feet into the air. It just doesn't work that way.

Will can get you far and help you, but it can't allow you to do anything you want.

Passing your physical limits will _KILL YOU_. Otherwise, as said before, THEY ARE NOT YOUR PHYSICAL LIMITS, JUST WHAT YOU THINK THEY ARE.

Will power can definitely help you push harder than you could normally. As stated before, you can't overide them entirely with sheep will (otherwise people could fly). Sheer will can prolong the effects of pushing or breaking physical limits. For example, truly determined people have prolonged passing out when they should have because they were so determined to do whatever it was they were doing. However, it can't be prolonged indefinitely, but to a small extent.

Ok

...you | death

The line being physical capabilities

It IS possible to do this:

......you | death

It is NOT possible to do this:

...... | you death

What this shows is that it is possible to make your physical capabilities higher, and your limits harder to reach, but it is impossible to step over the limit. Which is why it's called a limit.

For all you 'visual learners' out there.
