Those look great.

I bought clay pots to put my trees in and I'm already regretting it. The soil dries out in 2 days.

dom,

is that the global bucket set up? how much investment goes into each bucket? what type of soil mix do you use? do you keep your trees in there as final size or do you move them into ground or bigger container after certain number of yrs?

I use globalbuckets.org mix.

7 parts- Peat Moss
2 parts- Vermiculite
1 part- Perlite
1-2 cups of Garden Lime

70% PM, 20% Verm. and 10% Perlite

Well 3 cu ft of Peat Moss at Home Depot was $10. 4 cu ft of Vermiculite was about 35 and 4 cu ft of Perlite was 30. Lime was $3 for 40 lbs.

Buckets were $1 each and PVC 1" was 3.50 for 10 ft and I get 6 at 20".

Buckets- $2
PVC- $.50
Peat Moss- $ 2
Vermiculite- $3
Perlite- $1.50
Lime- $ .50

So 9.00 on the High end plus Osmocote at a few cents. These are rough estimates.

I get 2 to 3 years before root pruning. I haven't gone up at all and don't plan on it.

how the fruit quality with that set up? with that set up, it will have water in the soil most of the time.. does it water down the taste any? i know lack of water can cause issues with figs, but at the same time, constant water might bleed that taste of the figs. any specific issues? i'm sure the vegitative growth will be great.

No Problems with the fruit quality.

The idea of the SWC is to create an inground set-up in a pot. The plant only uses water when needed. I set up automatic watering to fill every two days. Never seems to dry out.

Dom, it does not appear that you use mulch (either black plastic or natural) over the potting mix. Have you experimented with this? I just set up my first two buckets and was thinking of using pine bark nuggets.

No I don't on suggestion from others. It probably would help to lessen watering but I get the benefit of rain without any top dressing. I am sure mulch would help with keeping weeds at bay and evaporation of water.
