Smoking and Circulation

While most people equate smoking deaths to cancer and lung disease, in fact many more people will die from circulatory conditions from smoking than die from cancer or other lung diseases. Also, in general, they will die at much younger ages from these problems. We would have many more lung cancers than we do if smokers could live long enough to get them. When many people with fatal heart attacks or strokes are autopsied, there are often precancerous lesions found that indicate that if these people had a few more years to live they would have eventually succumbed to these smoking induced diseases.

As for heart and other circulatory diseases, the two chemicals in cigarette that stand out as the biggest problems are nicotine and carbon monoxide. Nicotine, besides being addictive, has very powerful effects on arteries throughout the body. Nicotine is a stimulant, speeding up the heart by about 20 beats per minute with every cigarette, it raises blood pressure, is a vasoconstrictor which means it makes arteries all over the body become smaller making it harder for the heart to pump through the constricted arteries and it causes the body to release its stores of fat and cholesterol into the blood.

The heart has to work harder to overcome all of these effects. To work harder the heart, like every other muscle in the body, needs extra amounts of oxygen for the additional workload. The oxygen has to be transported through the blood. But carbon monoxide from tobacco smoke literally poisons the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. So this results in the heart having to work harder to get more blood to itself to work harder, because it's working harder. This is a circle. A vicious and deadly circle when it comes down to it.

Below we see the cross section of a normal artery. Usually we have nice big openings in the artery to carry oxygen as well as all other nutrients to all the tissues of the body.
If you compare this artery to the one below...
You can see the blood clotted blocking the blood flow to whatever organ or tissue this artery was leading to. Without being able to get circulation, that tissue will literally suffocate in a matter of minutes and basically be left as useless tissue. Sometimes the artery involved is a coronary artery, one that supplies the heart with the blood it needs to function.

If we look at a close up view of the artery...
Here we see the blood clotted and blood flow to the section of the heart that this artery was supplying was cut off. What will result is that a portion of the heart muscle that was supposed to get that blood flow suffocates and dies within a matter of minutes.
Above we see infarcted (dead) heart muscle (myocardial infarction). The tissue is literally brittle as illustrated by the cracking effect. Instead of being able to pump blood, this area whole section of muscle is no longer able to be utilized for its life sustaining function. Again, smokers get this much more often because of the effects of nicotine and carbon monoxide. Nicotine having all the direct effects on the heart itself, carbon monoxide robbing the oxygen supply, and both chemicals increasing clotting as well as clogging factors in the blood. If the section of the heart affected was larger enough the smoker would die from the first attack. Often smaller areas are affected and the patient can survive but has lost that specific section of the heart and may have permanent impairments from the now limited supply of heart tissue.
Cigarette smoking increases risks of blood clots significantly. If the blood clots in an artery and blood can no longer get through, the tissue that is supposed to be supplied with blood has lost the source of its oxygen and nutrients and dies in minutes. But clots are not the only way these arteries can be blocked. Another way is by clogs.

As opposed to clots where the blood actually coagulates and becomes an obstruction, clogs are where deposits of fat gradually build up. In the first picture below you can literally see the start of a artery getting a fat buildup.
Over time, this opening can get narrower and blood flow gets more and more impeded. This of course adds to the workload of the heart to pump through smaller arteries with increased resistance. But this clogging does not only happen to the coronary arteries, it literally happens all over the body. Remember, nicotine is not only a vasoconstrictor, making arteries go into constrictions every time it is administered, but it also causes the body to release its own stores of fat and cholesterol. Besides this, carbon monoxide has an effect that makes the fat stick to the arteries. The reason is carbon monoxide lowers the oxygen level of the blood (hypoxia) and hypoxia seems to have an effect making fat stick to artery walls.
Eventually over time arteries can become totally blocked with fat as seen in the slide below.
As in the case with a clot, blood cannot get through and the body part that was contingent on that blood supply for survival is lost. If this artery lead to your heart as in the case of the clotted coronary arteries above, the result would be a heart attack with a loss of heart muscle that if large enough would be fatal. But the heart is not the only organ affected this way. Another common site of problems are the arteries leading to the brain. Below is a picture of the base of a health human brain.
The arteries to the brain are very small here and clear, very difficult to see in fact. The arrows are pointing them out. To see them clearer here is a close up shot of these arteries...
Again note, these arteries are very thin and clear. Smoking increases the fat deposits to these arteries so often, instead of looking like this, they can look like the slide below...
With the fat build up the arteries are much easier to see. But this build up if complete cuts off circulation to your brain and as is the case with the heart, the part of the brain that no longer gets circulation dies. This is what happens in the case of a stroke. Circulation gets cut off from the brain either through a clog or a blood clot. The section of the brain that gets cut off suffocates and dies. If this part of your brain controlled speech, you will not talk anymore, if it controlled some form of motor function, these abilities will be lost and leave the patient impaired or crippled. If the section of the brain affected controlled some life sustaining function, the patient will die, again, within minutes of when the circulation cut off is complete.
The clogging and clotting effects of nicotine and carbon monoxide are the primary reasons why smokers are at such a higher risk of this condition. But this clogging/clotting effect is not limited to just major organs like the heart or brain. These chemicals affect arteries throughout the entire body. These affects may not be as deadly as cutting off circulation to the heart or brain, but in a real way they can show the true potential of the grip of the nicotine addiction.
Peripheral circulation, arteries going to the extremities are also highly susceptible to the vasoconstrictor effects of nicotine as well as the increase of clots and clogging risks posed by smoking. Smoking is a primary cause of much of the peripheral vascular disease seen as well as a powerful aggravating factor for people who have other preexisting conditions causing circulation problems to the extremities.

One condition though stands out as being truly unique and in many ways, demonstrates the real addictive nature of nicotine better than any other cause. The condition is known as Buerger's Disease (thromboangiitis obliterans.) Buerger's Disease is a condition where there is a complete cutoff of circulation to the finger or toes, resulting in gangrene.
Once gangrene occurs the only course of action is to amputate the affected area.
The most common age bracket that this disease strikes is in people between the ages of 20 to 40, normally young to get circulation problems that result in amputations. While it is much more common in men, women are affected to. What makes Bueger's Disease unique is that it is a disease that is basically exclusive to smokers. There are almost no documented cases of this disease happening in a non-smoker. Smoking is the primary etiologic factor. This is a rare disease, but noteworthy because of this unique nature of happening only in smokers.

If a smoker gets lung cancer, the person and other people can sometimes think, "well non-smokers sometimes get lung cancer too, maybe cigarettes didn't cause it." Same thing with heart attacks or strokes, non-smokers get them too, smokers just get them much more often. But again a certain level of denial can be exhibited and there is no way to conclusively prove that cigarette did it. But Buerger's Disease, having no other known cause and basically never happening in non-smokers does not lend itself to such denials. When a doctor determines he or she is dealing with a Buerger's Disease patient, a basic ultimatum is going to be delivered-quit smoking or lose your limb-your choice! If we were dealing with simply a bad habit, how many people given such an ultimatum and knowing it is true would continue doing the particular behavior given such consequences?

While Buerger's Disease is much more common in men, I have personally had two women who were Bueger's Disease patients in my clinics. My first actual encounter with a Buerger's Disease patient was with a woman who was 38 year old when I met her, which was about 24 years ago. Three years before I met her, at the age of 35 she was diagnosed with Buerger's Disease. This is actually relatively late to first be diagnosed. Her doctor had told her she had to quit smoking, but she did not comply and within a few months she had her right leg amputated. The circulation in her left leg was also badly affected, and after the hospitalization from the amputation she did quit smoking and had no further circulatory complications for the next three years.

Then one night at a party, a friend offered her a cigarette. She figured that since she had been off cigarettes for so long, she now had control over her habit. If she liked the cigarette, she would smoke one or two a day. If she didn't like the cigarette, she just wouldn't smoke anymore.

Well, she took the cigarette. She didn't particularly like the cigarette, but the next day she was up to her old level of consumption. Four days later she lost circulation in her left leg. She knew the reason. After three years with no problem and only four days after going back to smoking her circulation was affected. Her doctor told her that if she did not quit immediately, she would probably lose her other leg.

This is when I met her. She enrolled in a smoking clinic that week and quit smoking. Almost immediately her circulation improved. The doctor took her off anti-coagulant drugs and vasodilators he had put her on a few weeks earlier to try to slow up the process even though they were highly ineffective at stopping the likelihood of gangrene and amputation. But once she quit smoking she no longer needed them. Soon, her circulation was back to normal.

Nine months later, I called to ask her to serve on a panel. At that time, she sluggishly replied, "I can't come. I have been in the hospital the last two months." When I asked what had happened, she hesitantly replied, "I had my toes amputated." She had gone back to smoking. She tried one because she just couldn't believe she would get hooked again. She was wrong. She lost circulation, had her toes removed and eventually had her leg amputated.

I have had other clinic participants with similar experiences, being told to quit smoking or lose limbs who did not quit smoking. The reason I talk about this particular woman again and again is about a year after she had the second amputation, she came back into a clinic I was conducting and told me she had quit again and was now off about 9 months. I told her I was surprised, I thought she had permanently lost control. After all, she had her leg removed, the toes from her other foot, and eventually her second leg. When I confronted her with that information she replied, "The doctor finally convinced me. He said, 'You might as well keep on smoking, I'll just take your arms off next.'" That scared her into quitting smoking. Her next comment to me was unbelievable. She looked me straight in the face, dead seriously, and said "I DIDN'T NEED A HOUSE TO FALL ON ME TO TELL ME TO QUIT SMOKING."

I had periodic contact for the next 15 years at which time she moved away. She was fine over that whole time period. Whenever I brought up that conversation, we both found ourselves amazed that she could ever have made such an irrational statement. She happened to be a very rational, bright and inspirational individual. She would get around on wooden legs, socializes, and even occasionally would sing and dance on stage. Once she had broken free of the drug's effects and the smoker's psyche, she knew she could do anything.

Frequently, I would encounter people who quit smoking on their own. When I ask how they did it, they tell me of this marvelous lady they met who told of how she used to be hooked on smoking. Hooked so bad, in fact, that she had her legs amputated from a smoking related illness. It usually turns out to be the same person. By spreading her story, she offers inspiration and hope to countless smokers to break the habit before the habit breaks them.

Her story represents the real power of the addiction. She could not deny any where along the way smoking wasn't the cause. Not only would every doctor and all the research she could do pinpoint smoking as what was causing her problem, but she had quit, was fine, relapsed and within days lost her circulation-twice! The second time she actually lost her toes and her foot and then her lower leg. There was absolutely no way she could deny the cause and yet it took another 9 months for her to quit again.

Her continued smoking and ease of relapsing shows nicotine dependency at its worst. This overpowering nature of nicotine should not be lost on anyone here. You probably don't have a condition that is obvious as to force you to make a decision almost immediately upon relapse. In many ways this is worse, for cigarettes are quietly and insidiously destroying you, sometimes with little warning, or at least ones you will acknowledge. The first symptom to many circulatory diseases caused by smoking is sudden death. You may get no second chance.

Once you have a quit smoking, do everything in your power to make it last. You don't know that you will have the desire, strength or worst of all, the opportunity to quit next time. A tragic and fatal disease may get you first. Always consider the full danger of smoking and power of the addiction and your likely choice will be to - NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!

Hi Raymo

I know Joel will give you the scientific answer to your question, but I thought a practical response from me might also help.

Three months after I quit, I went for a full cardiovascular checkup at a clinic. The results were actually OK, although very slight concern was voiced over my blood pressure being at the top end of their range (145/85) and the fact that my heart-rate shot up under their stress test, which they terminated early because my heart rate was up to 230. Lung function was rated as acceptable. Cholesterol was OK but again at the top end of their range.

I went back last month, 7 months after the previous test. My blood pressure was down to 132/70, my heart rate was 20-30% down thru the stress test, which I completed this time. Cholesterol (all measures) was down. Lung function was nearly 10% better.

Now in addition to quitting, I have started workouts at a gym 2/3 times a week, and that has clearly had a beneficial effect. But in fact while I smoked I simply couldn't have done those workouts.

So there are some practical results, and I'm very happy with them. I intend to keep improving all those numbers over the next 20 years . By the way, I also suffer from intermittent claudication of the left leg, as does my father (so I blame his genes!). I also have noticed very little improvement since quitting, and I guess it really is a genetic issue, where the artery is simply not built as it should be. What I know for certain is that smoking could do nothing but worsen the situation, even if quitting does no more than maintain the problem at its present level. The really good news is that my father, who was diagnosed at the age of 40, is still with me at 88 years old !!!

I forgot about circulation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Joel for that reminder.
I am so happy to say that my finger tips aren't turning white anymore. They use to in cold weather. And it's getting cold here. They'd get so bad, WHITE, no blood!!! that even if I put them in a sink full of warm water it wouldn't work.
My fingers are red and rosy. Another reason to be joyful this holiday season!!!!!!!

Contrary to popular belief, smoking does not cause everything. Some diseases and conditions that smokers have may have happened whether they ever smoked or not. Although, while smoking does not cause everything, many conditions that it may not have been the primary cause of, it may still have been a major aggravating or contributing factor.

So working with the assumption that smoking does not cause everything, the logical conclusion then is quitting smoking cannot cure everything either. So how do we know if cigarettes were likely the major cause of a problem or symptom?

The way to tell is to quit smoking. If you have a problem on a chronic basis, every day, non-stop, that seems to improve or go away within a short time of a quit, well then smoking is probably the cause of the problem. If a specific symptom improves significantly but is still present, continuing smoking may not have been the only cause of the condition but it is obvious that it was still a major contributing factor. If the condition does not change one way or another, cigarettes may have played only a minor role or no role at all in the specific condition. But even in such a case, while smoking may not have been a cause of that problem, there are still a host of other problems that it was causing or could have caused given more time-some of these problems potentially life threatening.

As far as claudications go, cigarette smoking is often a major underlying cause. The high levels of Carbon Monoxide (CO) reached in the blood stream from smoking often bring it on or exacerbates the symptoms. These levels are usually reversed in a matter of days though, back to non-smokers levels. Often the severity of the condition and the frequency of the occurrences are reduced.

As far as reversal of build up of plaque after quitting, it is a bit of a controversial topic. There seems to be studies pointing in both directions and there is no clear consensus of medical authorities that these processes are actually reversible. But many people to claim major improvements in circulatory functions after quitting. With the CO levels returned to normal and the change in blood cholesterol ratios experienced by quitting, it seems very logical that some reversal of clogging of the arteries should be experienced. By the ratio issue, overall cholesterol often drops when a person quits smoking, but the amount of good cholesterol (High Density Lipoproteins, or HDL's, which are basically considered protective forms of cholesterol) often increase while the levels of the more dangerous forms (Low density lipoproteins and very low level lipoproteins, LDL's and VLDL's) and others, often decrease. So while the overall drop in cholesterol may not seem dramatic, the ratio change can often be very significant and a strong indication of reduced future risk and possible improvements from the preexisting exposure.

There is no question that quitting smoking reduces your risks of many problems, and halts the further damage that continued smoking WOULD have caused. There may also be some major repair of previous damages and problems caused by smoking. To keep your risks minimized of future problems and give your body the full chance to repair, always stay focused on the importance of knowing to never take another puff!

Hmmm . . . I used to have what Alice described too - my friends used to call it "white finger" & my husband would always rub my hands to try to warm the fingers but nothing worked - except since I quit (it's 3 weeks & 4 days) . . . no white finger!!
On the subject of smoking & circulation . . . I have an uncle who has had bi pass operations on his legs twice. He is not yet 60 & he can not walk comfortably now (I mean even just across the room). His doctor has told him he has to quit smoking if he wants to get any better or at least not be soon bed ridden, but the addict in him has not listened yet. I feel really sad for him . His father (my grandfather) died of lung cancer before he reached age 60.
ps. I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but he smokes so much as children we used to call him "skunk-le" instead of uncle because of the smell of the smoke.

Do smokers who work hard and keep their cholesterol levels low reduce the risk that smoking will contribute to their early demise? This recent study abstract (below) suggests that such hope may be misplaced! There's only one way to begin reversing the risks associated with smoking - NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!

It has been suggested that smoking does not influence risk of cardiovascular diseases in populations with low serum cholesterol levels. To determine whether cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor among men with low levels of serum cholesterol, data on 25-year coronary, cardiovascular, and all-cause mortality for 8,816 middle-aged men screened between 1967 and 1973 by the Chicago Heart Association Detection Project in Industry were examined. With Cox multivariate proportional hazards regression, relative risks of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease mortality associated with smoking for the two subcohorts with favorable levels of serum total cholesterol, that is, less than 180 and 180-199 mg/dl, were of the same magnitude as those for men with elevated serum cholesterol, that is, 200-239 and 240 mg/dl. In the two lower strata of cholesterol, the absolute risk and absolute excess risk of mortality for current smokers at baseline were substantially higher compared with men who never smoked, with all-cause death rates of 423.0 and 428.0 per 1,000 and absolute excess rates of 209.8 and 225.7 per 1,000. These translate to estimated shorter life expectancies of 5.3 and 5.7 years, respectively. Adverse effects of smoking on risk of coronary, cardiovascular, and all-cause mortality prevail for men with lower as well as higher serum cholesterol levels.

The issue of second-hand smoke on circulation was raised today. The effect is real and in predisposed individuals can be dangerous and even deadly. But the effects of first hand smoke on circulation are much more significant and pose a greater risk to any individual than second hand smoke will ever be to him or her. To reduce your risks of heart attacks, strokes, peripheral vascular diseases, and a host of other dangers always remember to never take another puff!

Abstract Background: Smoking is one of the most important risk factors for myocardial infarction. Smokers usually suffer their first myocardial infarction earlier in life compared to non-smokers. This age difference seems to be greater in women than in men. The aim of this study was to examine the age and sex differences in terms of smoking in patients with first myocardial infarction who were enrolled in the Swiss National Registry of myocardial infarction, AMIS Plus.

Methods: Data of 15,711 patients admitted to an AMIS Plus hospital between 1999 and 2008 with a first myocardial infarction were analysed. Several multivariate regression, interaction and sensitivity analyses were conducted.

Results: The mean age at first myocardial infarction was 68.5 ± 12.2 years for non-smokers and 56.6 ± 11.7 years for smokers (P < 0.001). After stratification by sex the difference between non-smokers and smokers was 10.2 years in men and 13.1 years in women. Even after adjustment for risk factors (overweight, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes), comorbidities (peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic lung disease), regular cardiovascular medication intake before admission, Killip classification and ECG on admission, male smokers were 8.7 years younger than male non-smokers at first myocardial infarction. In women, the age difference between smokers and non-smokers was 10.8 years, giving a sex-specific difference of 2.1 years (P < 0.001).

Conclusions: In the AMIS Plus cohort, smoking was associated with younger age at first myocardial infarction and this was much more pronounced in women. Public health campaigns should take into account the impact of smoking on premature first myocardial infarction, especially in women.

There are a number of physical, emotional and social adjustments that people go through when quitting smoking that can make life seem quite awkward when people are in the early stages of a quit. But consider the alternative--continuing to smoke and and giving cigarettes the opportunity to follow the natural course of slowly destroying you and literally risking your life and limbs. To continue on the road to physical and psycholgical health as opposed to the course you were on of total self-destruction always remember why you have committed to never take another puff!

Clearly this isn't our foot but it really someday could be!
This is Buerger's Disease is a condition where there is a complete
cutoff of circulation to the finger or toes, resulting in gangrene.
The ironic thing is that smokers think of smoking's harms in terms
of their lungs when in fact more of us die from smoking related
circulatory disease than from lung cancer. How's your circulation?

Abstract Background Smoking is known to be associated with an increased plasma homocysteine level. Both are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. B-vitamins modulate plasma homocysteine levels.

Aims To investigate the relationships between smoking, plasma homocysteine, nutrient levels and risk of cardiovascular disease.

Methods The European Concerted Action Project case control study of 750 cases and 800 age- and sex-matched controls aged less than 60 years from 19 centres in 10 European countries.

Results Smokers were at increased risk of vascular disease. This risk was greatly increased in the presence of a raised plasma homocysteine; cigarette smokers with a plasma homocysteine above 12 mol . l-1 had a 12-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease (OR 12·4 95% CI 7·3 to 21·2) compared with non-smokers with a normal plasma homocysteine. In both cases and controls the current smokers had a higher plasma homocysteine level than the never smokers (11·7 mol . l-1 vs 10·07 mol . l-1, P<0·05 cases; 9·90 mol . l-1 vs 9·53 mol . l-1P value non significant controls). Current smokers tended to have lower levels of folate, and vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 than never smokers. The risk of cardiovascular disease associated with smoking was not significantly altered by adjustment for levels of B-vitamins using a conditional regression model (OR for current smoker >20 . day-1 8·19, after adjustment for B6, B12, folate OR 7·09).

Conclusions This case control study suggests that smokers with high plasma homocysteine are at greatly increased risk of cardiovascular disease and should therefore be offered intensive advice to help them cease smoking. They also have reduced levels of those B-vitamins (folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12) that modulate homocysteine metabolism. While this finding may reflect a direct effect of smoking or reduced B-vitamin intake, supplementation of these nutrients may be appropriate in smokers with high homocysteine levels.

Just to make sure that everyone reading the above story really comprehends the message of the above article--it is that smokers need to quit smoking. An active addict can often read an article like this and think that now they have found out why smokers have more heart disease, and now they can simply take a pill and offset the dangers. The article "A Safer Way to Smoke?" addresses this issue head on. The cardiovascular effects of nicotine and carbon monoxide are firmly understood and known established risk factors. The only way to get these two substances down to non-smokers levels and to keep them down is to never take another puff!

I turned bronze today...i now go days without thinking of a smoke. How have i done it? one day at a time, utilizing the tools i discovered on this web site, posting instead of picking up. Im having surgery in a little over 3 weeks. Why? One of the arteries in my rt leg is completely obstructed. Now i wonder how that happened??? Duh??? I wanted to quit long before i did. When i found out i needed surgery, i just couldnt rationalize smoking anymore. I am freeeeeeeee!

I thought in honor of valentines day I would highlight the importance of giving yourself the gift of a healthy heart. As this string clearly shows, the assault that smoking takes on your heart and circulatory system is powerful and life threatening. More people die from heart and circulation conditions caused by smoking than from any other diseases caused by smoking including cancer. This is an often overlooked fact by many people. The way to keep a healthier heart that permits you to really share your life with all of your loved ones is to always stick to your commitment to yourself to never take another puff!

Just reading or hearing the truth is no guarantee that a person is going to believe or continue to believe the truth. It's amazing what lengths people will go through to continue to smoke and what kind of losses will continue to mount--eventually resulting in the total loss of health and possibly even life all because some people will not accept the premise that to stay smoke free they must never take another puff!

Smoking Boosts Stroke Type Linked to Brain Bleed

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A smoker's risk of stroke due to bleeding in the brain goes up with the number of cigarettes smoked, and those who smoke more than a pack a day have twice the risk of this type of stroke, U.S. scientists reported Thursday.

About 20 percent of all strokes are known as hemorrhagic strokes because they are caused by an uncontrolled bleeding either in or just outside the brain. Doctors have long known that smoking increases the risk of the most common type of stroke, known as ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes are caused by a blocked blood vessel and make up 80 percent of stroke cases.

Now the new study shows that a smoker's risk of hemorrhagic stroke is on par with their risk of ischemic stroke, according to the report in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.

"Our findings suggest that a person who continues to smoke can dramatically control their risk of stroke by modifying how much they smoke or by choosing to not smoke at all," said Dr. Tobias Kurth, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, in a statement.

In the study, Kurth and colleagues looked at data from the Physicians' Health Study, a large ongoing study of more than 22,000 male doctors.

During 18 years of follow-up, 139 men had hemorrhagic strokes, either due to massive bleeding in the brain or bleeding just outside the brain.

While "never smokers" and past smokers had similar rates of hemorrhagic stroke, those men who smoked fewer than 20 cigarettes a day had 1.65 times the risk of such strokes. Those who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day, equivalent to one pack, were twice as likely to have a hemorrhagic stroke.

"Our results add to the multiple health benefits that can be accrued by abstaining from cigarette smoking," the researchers conclude.

This answers a lot of my questions. I cannot believe the stress I put myself and my body through because of addiction to nicotine. After almost two years I am still learning more about health effects caused by smoking and I'm horrified that I actually paid thousands of dollars to do this to myself!!!!!!

While sitting here waiting for the surgeon to phone with the date of my second femoral (leg) artery bypass operation, thought I'd throw in my own story on this subject.

It didn't happen overnight; in fact, I can probably look back more than five years and see the gradual, very gradual at first, difficulty in walking long distances. Not sure what was causing the problem, I kept on smoking and tried to ignore the problem. If you ignore it long enough, it will just go away on it's own, right? :-)

By the time I reached the end of the smoking road on New Year's eve the effects of 37+ years of abuse of my body were becoming very evident. A chronic smoker's cough, the inablity to walk even one city block, the lack of energy to perform even the smallest household tasks.

Unwilling to even consider seeking medical advice or evaluation until I'd quit smoking, the results of the first rounds of tests were encouraging, except in the circulation category. My lungs were clear, no heart trouble, moderate blood pressure and even my cholestorol levels were normal.

The surgeon I was referred to gave me three choices:

(1) do nothing (except never smoke again) and the lack of circulation in my legs wouldn't get worse
(2) exercise regularly and vigourously, including as much walking as I could handle and my endurance would increase to the point where I could walk a full city block
(3) submit to artery bypass surgery and have at least an 80% chance of a successful outcome for five years or more

At age 52, and desiring a much better quality of life than I was "enjoying", the third option was the obvious choice. The surgeon was very pleased with the outcome of the operation on the totally blocked artery in my left leg, and is ready to work on the right leg as soon as I'm ready.

I'm ready; in fact I couldn't be readier. It's time to get on with my new life without restrictions and enjoy the years (many, I hope) that I've got left.
