I'm afraid this one is going to have to be brought up quite often. We don't want any of our members and readers to ever get confused by these ads. We do not endorse any product, organization, health or fitness aid, or any service that pops up at the boards. If a member ever puts up such an endorsement we will remove the post as per Our Courtesies. If we had any way to control MSN from placing such ads we would but as of this time we do not. The only thing we can do is to educate our readers so that they are not taken in by the practices of any of these MSN sponsors.

To appreciate the reasons for our warning here for links that show up that offer smoking cessation help, we encourage all to read the following strings that address why we want all of our readers to take advice given at these sites with a high degree of skepticism.

The Teaching of Conventional Wisdom at Freedom
Who Should You Believe?
So how did most successful ex-smokers actually quit?
"What ever you do don't quit cold turkey!"
Is cold turkey the only way to quit?

We want to make it clear that we are not trying to bash sites that are listed as sponsors. Some of them may have good products or offer good services. We just want to make sure that our readers know that we are not endorsing any of them . Also, if any of these sponsors are encouraging you to buy a product, any product to quit smoking that you are likely throwing away your money needlessly. As stated above, the only thing you have to buy to quit smoking is to buy the concept that to stay free you must never take another puff!

MSN is in control of these ads and their placement and getting all proceeds, Freedom's management team and participants are volunteers and not a single one of us has ever gotten a penny for the work we do at this site, either by any kind of sponsorship or by any kind of donation by anyone. For the record, www.whyquit,com also has not received any kind of support, we are not now seeking any kind of support or donation from any outside group nor from any of our members. Even if a sponsor is something like the American Cancer Society, Lung Association or Heart Association, we in no way are endorsing them or any of their views when it comes to smoking cessation. If members want to donate to help our cause, donate your time to help new people at the board.
If anyone ever has the idea that they should donate money to any of the "sponsored sites" because of the work they do on smoking cessation they should probably find a better charity and a better cause to work with. Money put toward smoking cessation efforts by the major organizations of the world are basically aimed at promoting NRT and other pharmacological products-very little is put toward doing the real education that is required to help the masses to quit smoking.

These organizations may do good work on other fronts, and we are not telling people who have been helped by these organizations not to donate to them for the other work they may do in prevention, research and services to patients, but if the motivating factor for doing a donation is the for the work they are doing on smoking cessation through sites such as ours, we'd suggest skipping the donation. Actually, the only corporation that makes our work possible is MSN for providing the forum space.

Also, being that we don't want diversions and controversies on the board, in the future we will not debate the merits or detriments of corporations who show up as sponsors. If we see a post referring to a problem with any sponsored site we will delete it and bring up this post that talks about our feelings to these advertising tactics.

Two exceptions to this issue - if a tobacco company ever shows up as a sponsor selling any kind of tobacco product or if a pharmaceutical company ever shows up as a sponsor with any kind of mention of a so called cessation product. In that event we will bring up lots of materials making it clear that the products involved are quite worthless and possibly dangerous to people's health and to their quits and that the only thing that a person has to "buy to" quit smoking is to "buy into the concept" that to quit smoking and to stay free is to simply stick to his or her commitment to never take another puff!

Thank you,
Freedom's Management Team
