Medication Adjustments
Often when people quit smoking they may find that medications that were adjusted for them while smoking may be altered in effectiveness once quitting. People on hypertensives, thyroid, depression, blood sugar drugs, and others may need to get re-evaluated for proper dosages once quitting.
The first few days quitting can be very difficult to determine, what is a "normal" withdrawal and what is a medication dosage issue. But once through the first few days, if a person who is on medications for medical disorders finds him or herself having physical symptoms that just seem out of the ordinary, he or she should speak to the doctor who has him or her on the medications. Point out to the doctor that you have recently quit smoking and started to notice the specific symptoms just after quitting and that they haven't improved over time. The doctor should know the medication and potential interaction that not smoking may be adjusting for and which way the dosing may need to altered.
Treating many conditions is a partnership between you and your physician. The doctor needs your input to effectiveness of any treatment, whether it be by physical measurements or by verbally communicating how you feel while under treatment. The treatment for one condition though is your primary responsibility. The condition--nicotine addiction. It is by no means a minor medical issue, it is in fact probably the greatest controlable health threat anyone will ever face. Afterall, what other lifestyle issues carry a 50% premature mortality rate? Not to mention all the other crippling side effects that go along with long-term smoking. The treatment for this condition is your primary responsibility. To effectively treat smoking for the rest of your life simply remember to never take another puff!

Smoking did not cause everything. It causes a whole lot of things though and many things that it does not cause, it makes worse. On the same token, quitting does not cause everything. Quitting is usually accompanied with many repairs, but there are also some adjustments (see Medication adjustments) that go on that may need a partnership with your physicians to get worked out.

My general rule of advice is whatever happens the first few days of a quit, whether it is physical or psychological reactions, blame it on not smoking. It is probably the cause of most early quit reactions. If it is a symptom to a condition that could be life threatening, such as severe chest pains or signs or symptoms of a stroke-contact your doctor immediately. While it is probably nothing and just a side effect of quitting, in the long shot that it is something else coincidentally happening the week you are quitting, you need to get it checked out.

Things happening weeks, months, years or decades after your quits though should not ever be assumed to be a quit smoking reaction. It is life going on without smoking. Some of these things may trigger smoking thoughts-especially if they are similar to conditions you did have in the past when you were a smoker. The situation now is a first time experience with a prior feeling where smoking was integrates thus creating smoking thoughts. But even in this case, the condition is creating a smoking thought, it is not that your smoking memories or your smoking past is creating the condition.

I'd like to add that handling stress also falls into this category. Stress, anxiety, fear: all types of emotions happen to never smokers / non-smokers as well as us ex-smokers and to active smokers too. How we react to or acknowledge and handle those outside influences is a learned skill. For Non-Smokers they do not have a link to tobacco or nicotine in regards to stress. Stress is simply a reaction to external stimuli to be dealt with. For us ex-smokers we eventually learn to disassociate stress from our former nicotine consumption activities. We learn that smoking tobacco did not cause or relieve stress - it only releived the anxiety created by the 'fight or flight' reaction to dropping nicotine levels. Active addicts have a built in source of stress - how to keep their nicotine levels elevated enough to postpone withdrawal until they can consume another dose. The nicotine does not relieve stress, it releives it's own absence which then reduces withdrawal anxiety - temporarily until the level drops again in 30 to 60 minutes.

One of my earliest thoughts about becoming an ex-smoker was that other people in my life who did not use tobacco and were not (actively) addicted to nicotine were able to live their lives - make decisions, deal with disappointment, adapt to new stimuli, deal with the death of a loved one, handle stressful situations ..... live their lives without the thought of smoking tobacco. I wanted to get back to that state of living free. If they could then so could I.

What I know now after a year and a half - It takes time to heal, not a day, not a week, not a month not any 'time limit'. We each heal at our own pace of understanding and accpetance. But know this - you can and will learn to live your life without consciously linking everything to a thought of smoking tobacco. My quit bro Bruce wrote about just that today.

A question came up about coughing up darkened phlegm after quitting. The string we have on "Cilia" explains how the healing process can cause cold like symptoms or the coughing up of tars collected over the years of smoking. These effects can go on for weeks or months for some people.

But life goes on without smoking, and sometimes there are other conditions that can cause the coughing up of dark specks. These conditions should never be ignored or written off to just not smoking.

Symptoms should be treated with the same caution as you would normally exercise when you were a smoker. If long enough or severe enough, getting checked out is a prudent course to follow. Once any problems are ruled out by your physician you will have the true peace of mind that the symptom is simply part of the healing and cleansing process that occurs from quitting.

Always know the best way to help prevent such problems in the future, and even more serious lung diseases that don't just have a short course of a week or two with a return to normal, is to keep your lung from ever being assaulted again from the thousands of chemicals, hundreds of poisons and 43 known carcinogens in tobacco smoke. The only way to stop this assault is to never take another puff!

Good things happen - don't get the attention they deserve.

Fact is, bothe good and bad things are gonna happen wether you are ingesting nicotine by smoking tobacco cigarettes or not. That's life, things happen, life goes on.
