Freedom will be moving to a new home!

You may have already read news that MSN is closing down MSN Groups in February 2009. If so, please don't panic. Everything will be fine. We are now in the process of investigating our options. We will do all we can to make the move as easy as possible. As you may know, New Years is our busiest time of the year. Our goal is to have Freedom's move complete by then.

Our primary concern right now is finding a way to migrate Freedom's more than 359,000 archived member posts to a new home. While MSN is providing the ability to move (migrate) MSN Group threads and posts to a new host website that it has chosen, we are hoping to locate a message board hosting platform that offers features and functions closer to those provided here at MSN Groups.

We would love to hear from you if you have the knowledge and skills necessary to migrate message threads between differently formatted message board platforms. Also, drop us a line if you know of a message board hosting platform or site that you think fits nicely with Freedom's needs. We'll see it gets considered.

We'll keep you posted on developments. Our deep and sincere thanks to MSN for giving us a free home since September 1999. Thank you! Still just one rule ... no nicotine today!

Just a quick update to let you know that Freedom's management team is still discovering, reading, learning and growing in understanding as to the options available to us. We have studied the issue of migration to Multiply and are in the process of test driving the Multiply blog site and message boards at phpBB, Aimoo and YuKu. If there is a format or forum that you would like us to consider please drop us a line at managers@whyquit.com.

Anyone who has any thoughts on this? Your inputs would be appreciated.

While a final decision of where Freedom will reside has not been made yet, I have decided on where to host the AskJoel site. AskJoel is a little less complicated of an issue, being a much smaller site and without the administrative concerns of Freedom since it is not a site with actual members. The new site can now be viewed at http://askjoel.aimoo.com/

I noticed that I have had a little trouble accessing the site for the last hour or so. Otherwise the site seems to have worked fine over the past week or so that I have been setting it up.

I decided on Aimoo because it was able to do a partial migration of the original MSN site, and is a bit easier for me to edit using an iMac computer. We were able to migrate all of the original posts from the MSN site to a group called Multiply, but its layout didn't really lend itself to the look and feel of the bulletin board format that we are all accustomed to. I have the Multiply migration partially incorporated into the Aimoo site, which is explained in the section titled How to Use the Archives in the "Archive of the MSN message board" section.

The final site for Freedom is not yet determined, tne managers are still exploring numerous options.

We're pleased to announce that Freedom has found a new home! We think you're going to like it! Our staff is going to spend this next week getting more familar with how forum operates and getting the place fixed up.

It is our current plan to introduce you to the new site on December 14 and to be ready to start receiving members by Monday, December 15. Until then we hope each of you stay focused on the most important task at hand, staying nicotine free today!

Without Freedom even feeling it, since last night Freedom's more than 300,000 member posts have been flying through cyber space and landing at our new home. This morning their arrival continues. We're still hoping to show you our new home Monday but it may take a day or two for staff to get the new place organized. We're confident you'll like it!! This could be the most painless migration imaginable or have a few bugs. Either way, with a bit of patience, we'll do just fine. Even the MSN smiley faces, we're bringing them with us ; )))

Well, lots of excitement at our end as things are still moving along but I'm afraid we jumped the gun a bit in two regards. First, the posts we saw flying out of Freedom and landing near our new site were simply a test being conducted by the host forum to see if migration was possible. The good news is that it is!! The bad news is that the forum's actual migration has not yet started. We're not sure how long it will take once it does but it was originally scheduled to occur today. Anyway, our new home has been built and it's simply a matter of the moving truck arriving and unpacking. We'll need to move a few things around but should be able to have all of you join us shortly. We'll post another update later today to let you know where things stand. Still one rule ... no nicotine today!

Move Update: We have received word that those migrating Freedom will provide us with an estimated completion time/date by today's end. We're clearly a bit behind schedule. Their involvement is central to a nearly seamless move as they tell us they have the ability to move all of our posts and all of our members. But even if they can't we're very near being prepared to move and function at the new site, with the ability to hand-moving threads from here to there until February 2009.

Hopefully we'll see action soon. Regardless of where we post there's only one factor central to each of us, that today we remain nicotine free!

Move Update: It appears that we have accumulated so many posts since 1999 ( more than 350,000) that they're having trouble finding a moving truck big enough. We are now being advised that, "Due to the large amount of data, the developers want to do a few more test runs before they do the actual migration." We have no idea how long this will take but have requested a rough estimate. Whether here or there, there has always been just one rule ... no nicotine today, never use nicotine again!
