I definately need some help figuring out this engine. The heads are C80E N-0809 with vertcial and diagonal exhaust manifold bolt patterns. These are 428CJ heads I have been told. The block has no casting numbers I can find, but near the oil filter adopter boss is the code RL15. The block has the main web reinforcement like a CJ, but there is no no '428' on the water jacket deck floor behind the centre frost plug. The crank is "IU", and the bore size is bigger than 4.25 inches. In addition, the crank has what I believe is 'heavy metal' welded in at the rear counterweight.

Could this be a 427 stroked with a rebalanced 428 crank with CJ heads??

This is my first Ford bigger than a 302, and I was going to put it into my 70 Mach 1. I bought this engine complete from fan to toploader and it was running strong.

I think you have a 427 block. Stock bore was 4.23". Are the main bearing caps cross bolted. Yes on the 428 heads. Do you have rod id numbers? You may have the 3.98" stroke which is a 428 crank. This should be a killer engine.

If the block has the three cross bolts on each side, about an inch above the oil pan gasket, then it's a 427. If it doesn't, then it's some other version of the FE motor, but it's generally difficult to tell a 428 from a 390. Identifying a 427 is easy, just look for the cross bolts.

This photo has the block upside down. You can see from this photo, how the external cross bolts go through the side of the block, and into the main bearing caps, to provide additional strength. Finding cross bolts on a block like this, three to each side of the motor, is almost a sure shot that you have a 427. You could, of course, have a late edition 406 that was cross-bolted by the factory, or some other FE block that was custom cross-bolted, but the custom jobs seem to be few and far between.

for the info and picture. My block is not cross bolted like the picture. What other identifiers should I look for to tell me what I got? I will try to read the rod numbers and post them here shortly.

we'll try to help.

Block ID numbers can be seen on the passenger side of the block, toward the front center of the passenger side, and/or on the driver side near the oil fitting. Some of them don't have any numbers at all, and those may be the "service blocks" that were used for warranty replacement calls, etc.

and all of the stuff he did say suggest to me a bored out 428 CJ. the first number of the date code you gave is probably an 8 not an R and that would make this a november 68 block. most CJ's did not have any casting numbers on the block so that would be normal. i would double check the bore size as only a fool would bore a 428 that far and sure as heck wouldn't last. hawkrod

the 428 numbers in the water jackets are not always where you can see them. often they are rotated around the bore so you can only see them if the block is really clean and you look down through the deck water passages. hawkrod
