Low hummingbird activity

Hi all...I live in Northern NJ (Blairstown) and have been feeding hummingbirds in my yard for about 15 years now. Their arrival dates are anywhere between April 20 and May 1 every year. This year however, I saw one male on 4/30, and one male on 5/3, and since have had no activity at all at my feeders. Usually by mid May, my regulars are here and activity feeding. Has anyone else in my area experience very low activity this spring so far? Starting to get worried for my crew. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much unless development has changed your general area profoundly. My impression at least in the south Jersey areas I frequent is that hummers are at near average levels maybe slightly down. May and June can be tricky. They breed where I am and yet I can go for days without seeing one.

I too got my first hummer third week of april but now it is hit and miss and this area is a breeding area for them. But like you action doesnt really pick up till mid-may or later. I suspect their are females nesting now in this area.

For the first time in about two weeks a male was out back feeding on the Alabama Crimson honeysuckle. I suspect he one of his boys has been around all along.
