Ichabod's not so lazy?

In honor of Ichabod, this is the forum for pointing out any and every flaw you can find in Far Out There. Technical mistakes (misspelling, wrong coloring, whatever) are fine, but in-universe nits (like why Trigger's pod didn't have a bathroom) are the best. Go nuts!

So, page 47. It's established that Ichabod's caused Sophia LOTS of stress having to scramble to find ways to cover for him.
However, This has started to bug me, and here's my guess as to why:
Ichabod uses public transportation. That means ultimately, his ability to get around is limited, and restricted to pre-set paths.
As a matter of fact, I could see it working out fairly simply-wait till he's in transit, talk to captain of ship (doesn't even need to be Crosby in particular, just any captain!) And once that's figured out, just find a list of cases that want a Nitpicker, and there you go!
And while I'm unfamiliar with Nitpicker organization in general, I figure that whoever you talk to, to schedule a Nitpicker visit could just do a check of any Nitpickers around the area and what not, to see who's available, and who is not.
Now, unless Ichabod is a MAJOR weirdness magnet (which may not be out of the question.) I feel like unless he does something like randomly get launched out an airlock, it shouldn't be the case that lots of shuffling is needed.
Now, I'd understand if he 'reported in' fairly often, which it seems he may actually do, but crap happening CAN'T be a viable escuse, if it were THAT easy, then said shuffle work would be part of being a Nitpicker-at any moment, things could go wrong and cost you a case, which would necessitate some sort of warning clause about that, besides the massive economic issues that would go along with it.

I feel like nitpicking your nitpicking post - Pretty sure Ichabod doesn't use public transportation anymore. He has hired a private captain to take him where he needs to go and when.
Of course, this means that if others are going the same place he is they can pay their fare and come along without him having a say in it...
From near the start of the current incentive story, we know that he used to take public transportation. His boss didn't seem very happy with that. Ichabod didn't want his own ship, but it seems he found a compromise with permanently hiring The Exposition.

From what I gathered from the conversation Sophia there, as well as other places in the comic, I got the impression that she was a little bit of constantly annoyed at him for a few reasons, one being his reporting-in times (takes ages to answer when she calls, and probably takes a while for him to get around to reporting back, and page 287 she mentions that he only ever seems to report in when he was in a lot of trouble) and also for the amount of trouble he gets involved in. Some things like space whales, riots, more encounters with Stilez than you'd expect if it were purely random, etc.
Blitz mentioned he has a bit of a Doctor Who complex - he tends to pick up strays as travelling companions, and the other half of that is that trouble seems to follow him around. Cap'n Crosby even lampshaded the trouble on page 295 - apparently it's good for business, and it is also why there were so many people on the ship after the Mad Scientist Convention.

Or something.
One day I will think before I post. Today is not that day.

Hrm...That makes sense actually.
He's somewhere between skilled enough to be worth it, and yet annoying enough to still give headaches, especially considering how you can't actually fault him when it's the whole 'trouble magnet' thing kicking up-that does seem annoying, when you want to blame a whole mess of shenanigans on something, and there's no real person to pin it on-just a case of at the wrong place at the wrong time...
That's actually kind of what I was doing with the Zaealix version of Layla, come to think of it-just replace 'trouble' with 'mad scientist attacks', and it being her ability to foil them, instead of actual Nitpicking skill, that makes it worthwhile to keep her as a Nitpicker....

You know, I don't thing there's anything I can add that hasn't already been perfect well stated. ;)

But to do so anyway: yes. Ichabod does have an astonishingly improbably habit of finding himself surrounded by chaos he can't realistically be blamed for. He's also very much an Absent Minded Professor type, and these two things together are going to get on the nerves of ANY boss. Still, he's very, very good at what he does. He's highly intelligent and well-educated, which is obvious important. He's emotionally detached (most of the time) which allows him to think rationally about things other people get impulsive about. And perhaps most important, he's really REALLY strange. Since his brain works in ways the rest of us would go mad trying to comprehend, he's able to approach a situation from directions most of us would never even consider. All together, this does make him more or an asset to The Nitpicker's Guild than a liability.

So, yeah. It's not so much that his bosses can't keep track of him, he's just kind of a headache to deal with (Layla: "Heck, I could have told ya that!")

an 'Absent Minded Professor'?
Well, that+ magnet for chaos (his third name IS entropy, maybe that's what did it.) Along with the stress and maintenance of an interstellar ship...I think I've got a good idea on why he refuses. He's too 'out of it' to properly maintain such a ship for long, not to mention the hassle of getting a license, picking out a ship with the features he wants, etc, etc.

That's how he sees it, basically. Most other people think he could do it if he'd only bother to try, though (and tell him so repeatedly)
