Hi. I'm new to DB. I've encountered quite a few people who have different preferences with regards to feet position.

Do you..
a) put both feet forward
b) put your gunnel foot forward and inside foot under your seat
c) put your inside foot forward and gunnel foot under the seat
d) put both feet under the seat
e) Other_______ (please state what)

Which one do you guys think is the "best" or most preferred way of using your feet/legs? Any other opinion about leg/feet use?

Thanks guys!

The best way to place your feet is whatever feels most comfortable for you.

Both feet forward.

Make sure to press with them as you pull through your stroke. From my experience if you need to put a foot back it's becasue you aren't strong enough in your core to bring your body back into your set up position fast enough.

Work on your core strength instead of compensating by puttin a foot back. You need both feet for pushing.

There's an article in an old issue of DB World about this..not sure which one..anyone with a subscription could probably pass it to you. Pros and cons of each.

Thanks for the feedback. I just wanted to see what most people were doing. I'll look into the DB World past issue.

Rule Number One: What feels the most comfortable to you is the best

Rule Number Two: Make sure you are secure/anchored in a stable position to rotate and shift while leaning out etc, except where this gets in the way of rule number one.

Rule Number Three: Try to have both feet forward for maximum push-off except where this interfears with rules 1 and/or 2.

Also, some people tuck the outside leg under during starts and then move it forward during transition. Shifting your feet to much can be risky to your balance and the boats so be careful with this.

I switch up my legs. For the start I have my inside leg back tucked under (and bracing) my seat, I find it works for maximum leg drive. After the start I switch to both feet forward and switch back again to my inside leg back for the finish. But as everyone else says whatever you find most comfortable and gives you maximum leg drive. As a newbie work with comfortable leg position but your main focus right now should be rotation, timing and reach. Good luck to you and enjoy paddling!

I put my inside foot forward, almost horizontal along the foot rest, with my gunwale foot braced up behind it. All except for the very first stroke of the start when I actually put my gunwale foot back on the footrest under my seat and kneel on the floor of the hull. I shift into my normal position as I pull through the first stroke.

Ya, it's pretty weird but it seems to work. The only drawback is that my gunwale quad cramps by the end of a 2000 m piece.

My understanding is that the "correct" position is both feet forward but mine is a hard habit to break.

I say go what makes you most confortable!
