Hi. I'm new to DB. I've encountered quite a few people who have different preferences with regards to feet position.

Do you..
a) put both feet forward
b) put your gunnel foot forward and inside foot under your seat
c) put your inside foot forward and gunnel foot under the seat
d) put both feet under the seat
e) Other_______ (please state what)

Which one do you guys think is the "best" or most preferred way of using your feet/legs? Any other opinion about leg/feet use?

Thanks guys!
Thanks for the tips!

I used to put my one leg forward and one leg under but by the end of practice, one side of my bum gets really numb. However, when I did this, my butt wasn't sore so I didn't need a butt pad.

I was told by someone else to put both feet forward and I found that it helped alleviate the butt numbness but I found that I needed a butt pad. I figured it's because I did start pushing more with my legs but it required more effort with the twisting and reaching.

I've been using both feet forward ever since that person told me to do that. BUT I never thought about mixing and matching - I think I'll try that next time.

Thanks a lot for the great advice!!

Who is the greater fool: the fool, or the one that follows him?

To the original poster, go talk to Stan (outside foot forward), or Doug, or Maxime (inside foot forward), or someone else who knows what they're talking about. The thing is they will give you different advice, because they each coach different techniques (flatty sprint vs. marathon vs. dragonboat hybrid).

Bottom line is there is no right answer, except maybe that everyone on your boat should have their feet the same way.

I put my feet at the end of my ankles...

Sometimes... I put my feet in sandles or shoes.

I have the same foot position as Seat #5 posted earlier. Gunwale foot is tucked under the seat, with the other forward. I'd like to change so that I have both feet forward, and tried to adjust at the beginning of the season. But after 7 years, old habits die hard. It was just too weird for me.

My suggestion ... if you're just starting out, might as well start off right. Train with both feet forward.

Since my starts are sprint strokes without much reach, i start off with both feet forward. Pushing off both feet gives me more torque for the half strokes. As I progress through the transition, I keep the outside leg forward and tuck in the inside. This gives my less-than-perfect-flexible body more twist and reach through the longer slower strokes. Once I hit the finish, my stroke shortens once again to sprint strokes and i put both feet forward again.

From what I've heard the National team coaches want their paddlers to put both feet forward, so that it's less awkward. It does mean that flexibility and trunk strength probably need to be improved.
