It was no lie, that ever since Theo had said that he was going to America, Lizzy had hoped that this day wouldn't come. In a way she had hoped that he would change his mind and stay in Britain. Not for her sake, but for his own. Knowing that she might not see him again, was just such a sad thought. He might not be The Duke, but he was still a very dear friend to her.
Of course Lizzy wasn't the only person on the docks, gathered to see Theo off. His family was there too, his parents were probably glad to know that Lizzy wasn't going with him. Lizzy didn't care much about them, but even she thought it would be better for him to go there alone. She kept her distance as Theo said goodbye to his parents and the other people who had gathered to see him off. Things between her and Theo had been tense in the last two weeks. Lizzy knew that he wanted her to come with him, but she just couldn't. It wasn't clear when he would be back, and Lizzy had too much going on in England to just leave it all behind. Most importantly her sons but also The Duke. He really was fighting to be a better man, and if she left it would be like letting him down. She just couldn't do that.
When he finally came over to her, she tried to act brave and put on a smile, but it wasn't very convincing. "I can't believe you're actually leaving" It was clear that she hadn't slept at all the past night. Theo had been the person who had brought her back to life and made her smile and believe in herself again. Lizzy loved him for that and it would be a horrible loss to not have him in her life, or just on the same continent.
The day to leave had finally come and though he was still just as excited as he was the day he told Lizzy about it, there was something else behind his emotions. He felt inexplicably sad and sick feeling twisted at his guts. This was the first time he would be leaving England since the war but that wasn't it, the issue wasn't leave it was leaving without Lizzy.
He could understand why she didn't want to come back it didn't make it easier. Theo bid goodbye to his parents and his sister. His mother had refused to stand new 'that woman' and so Theo was forced to make his goodbyes separately to each which cut down the time with them all. He kissed his mother's cheek and nodded at his father. He was honestly surprised that had even agreed to come but wasn't shocked by their coldness as they said goodbye. His sister was the opposite. She threw her arms around him, kissed him and sobbed into his shoulder, though she claimed they were happy tears he knew she would miss him.
She would be coming over in a weeks time, the ticket that was supposed to be Elizabeth's had been exchanged for one later in the month, it had been a hard thing to do but he knew it was pointless to hold onto it in hopes she'd change her mind.
As he reached Lizzy he leaned in to kiss her. They weren't together anymore but it was a habit hard to break. He laughed softly as she spoke and nodded his head. "I can't believe you really aren't coming. You can still come, anytime. It will never be too late." He whispered as he leaned in to hug her.
