Out of the Frying Pan...

Anything and everything can be hawked here. The buildings seem even more haphazard than the rest of the town, as if they were stacked on top of one another. Stalls line the streets, where items are paid for with other items. Bartering can get loud and crazy here. Some merchants live above their shops or in the shops.

Dutch quietly digested the giant tale that Jia had produced while he sipped away at the mason jar. The more she explained, the more questions he wanted to ask. He kept quiet however as his new companion was trying her damnedest to explain even if she did not understand all of it. What a horrid position to be in.

Some of what she spoke of made sense, the jail and the door mostly, but he had no clue what a fallout shelter was nor did he know of the world that he had been cast into. What were aliens anyways? It all felt like a really really vivid dream, but with each lap of the fizzy soda water it be came more and more clear that this was all real.

When she asked about how he manged to get away, Dutch finally rose out of his introspective haze. Jia looked different now, as if someone had opened up her mouth and stuck a candle inside. Her eyes were dimly lit up and what appeared (smelled) like smoke had begun to rise from her nostrils, had her tongue finally caught flame?

As confused and shaken as Dutch was by the events that had happened, he could not help but stifle a giggle at the sight before him. "I'm sorry... you're just.. uhh.. smoking." He dodged, hoping he could change the subject, "Is that normal for you?"

    "Smoking?"

The drake's cheeks flushed as she realized that she had begun to smoke from her nose due to the excitement of everything. She clasped her hands over her face, covering her nose and mouth. Of all of the stupid things... she was trying not to freak him out and then she had to go and start doing silly Fae things!

Once she saw that he was more amused by the situation than anything, she relaxed a little. Her cheeks returned to their natural shade and she lowered her hands. "I, uh, yeah. That happens. Sort of comes with the territory for what I am," she explained. "I'm a Fae. A fairy-person, I guess. Except I'm not like fluttery-wings and sparkles and nature. I'm a Drake."

She wanted to show him, but that wasn't exactly always the best way to do things. If he asked, then she would, but she hoped that it was something that could simply be explained. "My natural form is that of a small dragon. I can breathe fire, so sometimes when I get particularly upset or excited, I smoke a little."

Jia shrugged. "There are weirder things I guess, but it's kind of embarrassing sometimes because it gives away my emotions pretty easy. Besides, it makes me look a little silly."

Drake as in Dragon? Dutch could not help but look a little surprised. Out of all the odd people he had encountered in his life, he never though he would end up sitting next to a dragon of sorts! The anansi felt relieved that he was in somewhat familiar territory and with sort of kinda kindred spirits.

"Please, don't. It's pretty cool to see.. I guess.. to someone unfamiliar with you. I mean I wouldn't mess with someone blowing smoke like that! " He reassured her, not wanting to embarrass his host any more than he had with his curiosity. He wanted to tell her about his own natural form, but still felt hesitant. His was nothing nearly as cool or as acceptable, in fact he had frightened many friends and plenty of lovers with it. "I'm of a similar vein I guess that's a way of putting. I'm not a fae though and I don't think I'm a type of were either." He spoke with hesitation as he tried to figure out the best way to word things. Surely she would not straight freak out, but he did not want to make her uncomfortable.

"I'm what people from my world call an Anansi. I deal with arachnids and stuff. I don't really have anything cool like blowing smoke, but I was able to get out of the holding cell you guys have and that's something I suppose." He kept silent about turning into a giant spider or his clowering form for the time being as it tended to be a really difficult to stomach for a lot of people. "I guess I could add that my hair's not really black and my eyes aren't really blue, but that's more of a spider thing. Most people assume I'm sort of a fae or something y'know?" He was assuming that there were other fae about in the world of door or at least fae that were similar to what he understood, after all, it was entirely possible that they could be completely different here.

Jia giggled at his reaction. The fact that he wouldn't mess with her was nice, the idea that a tiny little thing like her could possibly intimidate a big man like him with a little smoke was sort of an odd one. It seemed that he had encountered plenty of weird things in his own world and that he knew what a dragon was, which meant that she wasn't going to shock him too much with anything. That was definitely a pleasant surprise.

She listened as he explained himself, saying that he wasn't a fae or a were, but that he dealt with arachnids. She wasn't sure what that meant, really. She knew what arachnids were, of course, but how he "dealt" with them was still up in the air. He explained that his hair wasn't really black, his eyes not really blue, and she nodded. Some Fae used glamour the same way his, uh, spider-stuff worked. At least, that's how she tried to process it. There were plenty of Fae who looked like one thing and in reality were another. At least for Jia, she actually could become physically human and physically Drake. It made getting laid a little bit less complicated, to be certain.

"Spiders, huh? I don't mind spiders. Their webs are so pretty and they take care of bugs. I mean, there aren't a whole lot of spiders here because most of 'em died off when the government's blew everything up, but there are some and I leave them alone. We had one spider that I ever saw in the vault, this weird little brown fuzzy guy, and I had to hide him from my grandparents because they thought anything from the outside world was contaminated and might hurt me. I still don't know how he got down in the vault, but he was a neat little thing. I used to feed him pieces of meat from my own meals and I kept him in my closet. I wasn't very old, so his name was Fuzzy."

She smiled at the memory. Fuzzy hadn't lived very long, but from what she had read in books, spiders usually didn't. She returned her attention to Dutch. "So how do you 'deal' with spiders, exactly?"

Dutch was not sure what to make of Jia's question. He certainly was not about to shift into any of his forms but maybe if he explained them carefully enough her curiosity would be sated. It was always an awkward occasion for the anansi to deal with, so much that he almost went and got a pamphlet printed, but he could never figure out the best way to have it written up.

"Well, I guess I could start with what you can already see." He spoke softly as he leaned back into his cushion, "The color of hair and eyes shifts based on what light is present, it normally reflects whatever colors are being used. Aside from those traits, I can jump pretty high and have a good grip on whatever surface I can put my hands on. I can't leap over buildings or climb them, but it's close to what a werewolf could do I suppose." He paused briefly to finish his drink and make sure that Jia was following along. He loathed having to explain things more than once and even more so when it was about his traits.

"Like the weres and yourself, I too can change form. However, I have a few different..types? I guess that's the easiest way to put it. Like you, I have a natural form, mine being that of a jumping spider. I'm pretty big for a spider but not quite as large as let's say a giant wolf, it's still pretty off putting to most though. My second form is when things are a bit different. See I sort of turn into this horde of smaller spiders, I don't really know how else to explain it. Nearly a hundred little things that are all pieces of me. I don't know how it works nor what magic is involved but I can control and see through them all. It's like I'm in a hundred places at once but still myself all the same."

He stopped again unsure of how well Jia was comprehending everything. She had kept silent the entire time, which from what he had noticed earlier was hard to do and he could simply not fathom what sort of thoughts she had about the whole situation. "My other form is sort of a mix between the first and my human one. I really hope no one ever sees it as it's rather awful to witness. I only use it if I feel like I need to fight to survive, I much rather use a gun or something though." He felt as though that was descriptive enough without being too damning, just as he left out the part about the spiders being tied to memories. There were just somethings he did not like to share.

Jia listened, eyes wide, the smile on her face getting wider and wider as John went on. She clapped her hands together when she was done and began to laugh. "You can turn into a whole butt-ton of spiders? And a giant spider? And a giant spider-man-creature-thing? That is quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever heard in my entire life and I have met a lot of people will cool powers but that seriously is awesome."

Unlike the majority of people, Jia liked spiders. She thought they were really neat, with their loads of eyes and eight legs and the webs. The way they collected bugs was a lot like how she collected her shinies, so she sort of respected them in that way. Once she had squished a spider on accident and she had felt really awful about it for several days. The whole idea of killing something so wonderful was just the worst.

"All I can do is turn into a little dragon and breathe fire. That's so boring compared to having your mind split into a fajillion different places and being everywhere at once. That's some metaphysical crazy shit right there," she said with a grin. "Ok, so you're an Anansi, which means you're an awesome spider guy, and you don't know how you got here, but you're here now. You should have met our crew to introduce you to the world, because that's the best way to do things, but you met me instead."

She took a deep breath and then sighed. "Ok, I guess you should ask questions, not me. You're the one who's trying to figure this all out. Would you like some more fizzy-pop?"

Dutch looked down to his half-empty glass and shook his head. It was awful nice of Jia to ask but he had a lot more on his mind than soft drinks. How was he supposed to know how things worked around here? He still was not sure where exactly 'here' was anyways!

"I think I'm done with asking questions, your answers are even more confusing to me." He spoke quietly, as if he had an onset migraine. Truth be told he really did not know what else to do in this type of situation other than sit by and take the world for what it was. "I guess all I need to know is that I'm stuck here for now. I mean what else am I supposed to do?" He was frustrated and angry about the situation but he felt as though he was starting to direct it at Jia.

He quickly downed the rest of his drink and started to get up, "Sorry, that was not really directed at you. I'm just.. dealing with this. I guess I should probably go and talk with the 'crew' or something. Get set up with a bed or maybe a looney bin. I feel like I'm going crazy here."

As much as he simply wanted to walk out and disappear he stopped himself at the doorway and looked back to fiery little shopkeep. "I really appreciate your help, I really just don't know how to take all of this in."

The drake frowned at Dutch's frustration. She could understand it, sort of, but it was still not something she wanted to hear. Jia wanted everyone to be happy and everything to go well and she sure as hell didn't want Dutch to be annoyed or upset, because she sort of liked him. Not liked him liked him, just the normal kind. You know, like friends. She watched as he stood and went to leave and then jumped up, flapping her arms almost as if they were her wings.

"Now you wait a gāisǐ minute!" she swore, smoke puffing out of her nose. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes shone extra-bright, almost as if her brain was on fire. "I feel responsible for you now! You came into my store, you have no idea what's going on, and I am not about to just let you mosey off into the sunset and die or something! If you want to go meet some of the people who normally introduce newcomers, I can take you there. If you want to find a place to stay, I can help you do that too. The one thing you are not doing is walking out that door by yourself and leaving me sitting here confused and worried."

She pushed herself between the Anansi and the doorway and crossed her arms. "If you want to go see Sheriff John or Madlenka or Clive, that's fine. They normally do the processing and help people get adjusted. I can take you to any one of them and they can help you. Going off to find them yourself is just not an option."
