Creating randomness

Some people have not understood my machine cigar box model of Mr. Byrne.

They think the alphabets slide by each other. They do not.

The alphabets described in the machine are permanent and stable, concentric and identical on both wheels.

To create a randomness smaller wheels were added, but having only a pointer.

As the large wheel with 2 alphabets moves counterclockwise in as many positions as is needed to get the selected letter (Byrne must have used it the same way, simply turning the wheel to the proper position), a randomness is generated by moving the small wheel to the right only 1 space.

You can never get 2 consecutive generations of the same letter, because the alphabet wheel does NOT move when the next letter is the same, but the arrow wheel ALWAYS moves 1 space in the opposite direction.

This DOES NOT create an autokey and it does not create a new letter on the second wheel.

You can do the same thing with only one wheel, selecting outer alphabet and reading the arrow at the inner alphabet.

I used 2 wheels lke Byrne so that encryption could take place from right to left and decryption from left to right, one wheel to the other.

BUT BOTH WHEELS SHOW THE SAME POSITION AND LETTERS.

You cannot get consecutive identical code.

Try it.

Byrne simply turned the right wheel and the left wheel moved synchronously with it. He selected the letter on the outer alphabet on the right wheel, and he read the cipher text on the left wheel on the inner alphabet.

But, both wheels have the same position.

Get some cardboard and thumbtacks. Put 2 identical wheels as I have shown together. On top of that, put the arrow wheels.

You will find it impossible to generate identical consecutive code for a very long period of time, since you must return to the same starting point for this to happen.
