Here's an interview with James Damore made by Jordan B. Peterson, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto whom I greatly respect. Apparently, what motivated Damore's memo was at least in part a policy of positive discrimination unofficially carried out by Google (no records of meetings kept), and the firing of Damore itself was only hastily decided upon after the memo had caused a great hubbub and gone viral. In other words, it seems the "black bloc" at Google (so to speak) was pushing management ahead of itself and that fear of politically correct repurcussions was instrumental in management's decision to fire Damore.
It's a pattern I recognize from several instances of politically correct tyranny in Sweden, where psychological terror is employed to make institutions commit themselves to decisions contrary to their own stated and/or the implicit principles of an open society.

I once took an after-work part-time job writing science lesson plans for teenage English language learners (mostly made up of immigrants). I knew I had to make science/STEM understandable to immigrants that didn't know the language. In addition, I knew I had to throw in student discussions and participation projects. So, I had to consider all sorts of diversity groups: language diversity, extroverted learners, hands-on learners, etc. It was impossible. I had a mental block-out. When you're expected to appease everyone, you end up appeasing no one.
