This is going to be rough since I only remember bits and pieces..

Movie 1: Possibly black and white, maybe not. There is an excavation in a subway tunnel.. They find a large insect (looks like a grasshopper or cicada about the size of a large dog) frozen or stuck there. It's not alive but wierd things start happening around the place. At the end, there is some sort of explosion and a huge fireball/smoke pillar.. and in the smoke/flames there's this huge image of either a giant bug head or the devil... hope that helps.

Movie 2: I think it's japanese actually.. there is this guy that gets half of his face all messed up.. falls for a girl (or maybe it was his girl before the accident) and at the end he saves her and other people from this alien creature (possible had pincher claws? lol).. they fight and he dies or kills himself in the process of defeating it. He and the alien were normal person size btw. Can't wait for some help on these!!!

Hi sjdunnejr and welcome to the board!

The first one is easy because it's a personal favorite! It's called Quatermass and the Pit (AKA 5 Million Years to Earth). Great, great movie :)

Not sure about the second one...maybe someone else on the board knows this one?

Welcome to the board sjdunnejr. Your "bits and pieces" are quite descriptive and helpful in figuring out these movies (not to mention better than what I'm sometimes able to extricate from my memory about movies I haven't seen in 30 years or so).

Like Beastball said, the first one is an easy one, based on your accurate description, and a favorite of many here at the board. If you get a chance to see it again, I'd highly recommend doing so--the movie holds up very well after all these years.

"Five Million Years to Earth" ("Quatermass and the Pit") at IMDB:

The second one doesn't really sound familiar to me either, but I wonder if it might be "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster"? Check out the trailer and see if it looks familiar.

The two of you are amazing and dead on!!! I never knew it would be that quick and easy. I can't wait to find the full movies and watch them again.. maybe with my son.. I was younger than him when I first saw these. Maybe that's a bad thing but I haven't killed anyone or sprouted tentacles yet so it can't be that bad. Thanks again and now I know where to go when I'm stumped. Oh and howdy neighbor to the Col. I live in Worcester.

Well Howdy Neighbor! Yeah, the good folk here at the board are quite knowledgeable about CDF-type movies. I had a couple of long-standing personal mysteries solved here faster than you can say Mechagodzilla.

By the way, since you're in Worcester, are you aware of the "Attack of the B-Movies" series that's being put on by National Amusements? The Blackstone Valley Cinema Delux 14 theater on Rt.146 is participating in the series (last year they had it at the Showcase North Worcester theater). Every Thursday night until the end of October they are showing double features of great old public domain horror/sci-fi movies--like the stuff that used to be on Creature Double Feature (in fact they actually have a few movies that WERE shown on CDF!). The shows are only five bucks! If you're thinking of introducing your son to some of the old movies you loved as a kid this is a rare opportunity to see some of them on a big screen! And even if your son isn't inerested, it might be something you'd like to check out. Here's a link to the thread on the board about the series that has the full schedule...
