Music is my life. It’s who i am, and has always been an important part of me. I began focusing on one day having a career in music a few years ago and began writing songs not long after that. Then, after picking five of my favorites, I started recording them on my laptop at my house. With the help of a few friends, the support of my mom and other family members, and seven months of long, hard work, I completed my first EP album in the spring of 2010, and entitled it “Patience EP”. I began selling copies to close friends and family members and slowly began trying to get my music out into the public. Shortly after, an extreme, eye opening obstacle hit me. In August, i was diagnosed with stage four bone cancer. My life, already filled with music, friends, and school, was now also consumed with hospital visits and chemotherapy treatments. More about my diagnosis and my progress with treatment at caringbridge/visit/carsonsumpter. so as my life has drastically changed with my fight against cancer, my music has become a much needed factor in my fight. It has kept me going and will continue to as I play and write. I hope my story and music can serve as an inspiration to many people as i continue through this journey and my life as an artist. Thank you to all of you and I hope you enjoy the site. God Bless!

3. Pelham teenager will open for Taylor Hicks at WorkPlay

Dec 07, 2010 4:08 PM EST

It's the chance of a lifetime for an aspiring musician to play alongside an idol. Thursday, a 16-year old fighting cancer will open at WorkPlay for Taylor Hicks. The opportunity couldn't have come sooner.

In the empty music venue, Taylor Hicks shared music, advice, and laughs with Carson James- the young Pelham musician who Hicks personally choose to open for him Thursday at WorkPlay.

"I know what it feels like to try to get your music out there, and I also know how hard it is to get your music out there and get your stuff heard," said Hicks.

James remembers the day Hicks called him about the gig.

"I get this call, and he says, 'can you open for me?' I say, 'I think I can fit it in my schedule,'" said James.

It's quite a schedule for a high school student. In addition to playing in the marching band and cutting a CD, he's also battling stage four osteosarcoma. He was diagnosed with the bone cancer in July. He's undergone chemotherapy to fight the disease that's spread throughout his body.

"Just feeding my soul and playing music and hanging out and making the most of life I can," said James.

On Thursday night, the determined musician will fulfill one of his dreams when he strikes a chord on the stage to play alongside an idol.

James will open the show at 8 p.m. Thursday and will be joined by Hicks. Hicks will play a few songs with James than continue.

4. OBG
Taylor talked about how musically talented Bham was and how he found out "Hmm-this guy went to Huffman (high school)-I went to Hoover. I can what that dude can do"--then he introduced RUBEN STUDDARD and they did "Woman's Gotta Have It". The crowd loudly roared their approval. I thought "Gee what a lifetime moment-BOTH Alabama AI winners on stage together and grooving and thrilling the crowd!!" IT was special-and over too soon.

....
For the encore he came out wearing his special edition Bham Toys for Tots tshirt.

I simply cannot put into words how amazing last night was... The entire night went absolutely great and it was all just perfect. Opening up for Taylor was so cool, but getting to play on stage with him made the night unforgettable. We got to hang out with him and his band throughout the night and sign autographs after the show as well. Also got to meet a ton of new people in the industry that can really do something for me and my career. It was a night i will always remember, and hopefully is only the beginning to a career, getting to do what i love to do more than anything else. thank you to everyone who came out to the show and to all who continue to support me throughout this journey. i love you all!

....me and Taylor last night during my last song, “Superstition”. Taylor killed the vocals for it and i tried my best to hang with him!! it was amazing, performing with some of my best friends on stage with an idol!

Taylor's Workplay show was so great. I am so glad I was there. Was glad to be able to see Carson and loved seeing Reuben. Taylor sang Maybe You Should beautifully. I know we always say this but this is the best show I have seen Taylor do. lol. He was funny, danced a lot and put on a great show
I saw and meant lots of SP friends. I reserved a table - or at least they said I would be able to sit in the wheelchair. Well - Workplay was kind enough to reserve a table for me and my roommate.

9. DebbieinFlorida

Taylor was so happy to be home. You could just tell. It was electric. We were front row. We were dancing and singing and having a great time.
We went to the famous Saw's Barbecue, and it was very good. We signed the Wall that the Soul Patrol was here.

There was a moment last night in the encore, during Scarlet Begonias, when Taylor brought Clay onstage and they were all jamming out, and later when Carson joined them for "Bulletproof", when the joy was palpable. In fact, I was checking Twitter last night after the show and 2 or 3 people had independently used the word "joyous" to describe the night. In the hundreds of concerts I have seen in my life, I have never seen any group of people that seemed to be so happy to be playing together. It reminds me why I got on this train in the first place.

By the time we got to the table, Taylor looked tired, he kept flexing his right arm as if it were hurting, but he still took his time with everyone and made sure everyone got pictures. Amazing to me that he has made himself so accessible. Dealing with fans was one skill he has had to learn over the past five years, and even though shy, he handles everyone with such courtesy.

Two former winners of the Fox TV reality series, Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard, performed together on Dec. 9 at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham.

Actually, Studdard made a guest appearance during Hicks' show here -- and it's the first time they've ever done something like that, Hicks said.

Studdard, who won the show's crown in 2003, lives in Birmingham. Hicks, who took the title in 2006, was born in Hoover and spends much of his time on the road.

Although Thursday's concert wasn't strictly a Christmas show, Hicks asked ticketholders to bring donations for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

He also gave a boost to a young singer-songwriter from Pelham, Carson James, booking the teen as his opening act. James, who's been diagnosed with bone cancer, released an EP this year called "Patience."

....Standing in line waiting to enter WorkPlay were many of local fans/friends and schoolmates and parents to see the opening act - Mr. Carson James. What a brilliant idea to hand pick this talented young man and his band for Taylor's home concert. I had an opportunity to listen (evesdrop) on their conversations and even engaged one father in some commentary about Carson. Turns out he was Carson's girlfriend's father. Very supportive people --

....Taylor and the band were on fire last night -- high energy, great set list, and responding to the crowd's enthusiasm level. From my vantage I could see the number of younger attendees - the girls were rocking and jumping up and down to the songs and music; there were men dancing in the crowd; fantastic response to each song and Taylor was LOVING it.

.... a ton of presents for the Toys for Tots charity were donated. Taylor should be very proud of his involvement.

Carson Sumpter played guitar in October 2010 while at Children's Hospital undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. (The Birmingham News/Butch Dill)
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Carson Sumpter, a Pelham teenager who inspired thousands with his Christian music and testimony as he battled cancer, died this morning at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
He was 17.
Sumpter, who learned a year ago that he had bone cancer, played in the marching band at Pelham High School, where he would have been a senior this fall. Despite chemotherapy, the spread of cancer and a tumor in his right leg, he was able to march in the high school band for eight of 10 football games last fall. The school held a pep rally for him and the junior class signed a Spirit Stick for him.
He played drums and guitar in the praise team at Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster. Sumpter also wrote music and recorded many of his original songs. He was a speaker at the Awakening crusade at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in October that featured Evangelist Scott Dawson and radio personality Rick Burgess. He played music at WorkPlay before a Taylor Hicks concert and at the Helena Fourth of July celebration.
"I'm a very spiritual person," he said in November. "You have to keep God as part of your life and pray. You've got to trust God through it all. When you don't have God, that's truly when you're alone."
Sumpter underwent surgery on Saturday to relieve fluid in his lungs, then played drums at Westwood Baptist on Sunday morning. He died this morning. "He was at peace; he was so ready to go," said his father, Jim Sumpter.
"His hope was he could touch other people, so they could come to know Christ," Jim Sumpter said. "He wanted people to see Christ through him."
There will be a celebration of life service for Sumpter at Westwood Baptist in Alabaster on Thursday at 6 p.m.
