Katharine McPhee Hilariously Shades ‘American Idol’ Foe Taylor Hicks In Vote Plea
In a push to get people to register for November’s midterms, who knew a burn from 2006 could be so clever?

Katharine McPhee clearly knows how to do much more than belt out a killer rendition of “Over the Rainbow.” She can also deliver some grade-A shade.
In doing her part to spur voter registration for November’s crucial midterm elections, the 34-year-old actress and singer on Tuesday posted an old photo of herself losing to her “American Idol” rival Taylor Hicks.
In 2006, Hicks beat McPhee on the competition reality show when his fan base, dubbed the “Soul Patrol,” turned out in droves to vote the “Silver Fox” the fifth season winner.

“Voting matters,” McPhee simply wrote as the caption to the photo. She also added an upside-down smiley face emoji, which seems loaded with sarcasm.

Since 2006 McPhee has gone on to release albums, starred in the NBC drama “Smash” and had a leading role on the now-defunct CBS show “Scorpion.” She is also recently starred in the Broadway musical “Waitress.”
Hicks released his self-titled million-selling debut the year he beat McPhee on “Idol,” did a stint on Broadway in 2008 and began hosting the INSP food show, “State Plate” in 2016.
A quick gander at his official website shows that he released a “new” single called “Six Strings and Diamond Rings” in 2017 and currently has no upcoming show dates.
Though McPhee hasn’t achieved the same kind of success as “American Idol” alums such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, she has managed to remain a recognizable name, get steady work and become a certified burn-master.

The former "Scorpion" star tries to get out the vote by pointing out that Taylor Hicks beat her on "American Idol," but Hicks claps right back.
Katharine McPhee threw some major shade at the man who beat her out for the fifth season of "American Idol," but Taylor Hicks clapped right back.
The former "Smash" and "Scorpion" star captioned a photo of Hicks' winning moment, with her standing by his side as runner-up, by saying, "Voting matters," with an upside down smiley face. She then presented a link to the United States government's official voter registration page.

Hicks shot right back, though, flipping a smiley face of his own in response, while agreeing to her sentiment. "You're right, voting DOES matter!" he said. "But you're a little late to the party, Kat." Hicks provided a more personal link to a PSA he did for his home state of Alabama, encouraging its citizens to vote.

While McPhee has gone on to a much higher profile career since her time on the "American Idol" stage, neither of the top two finalists went on to huge success on the music charts. That honor goes to fourth place finisher Chris Daughtry, with honorable mention for country darling Kellie Pickler, who finished in sixth.
After failing to find sustainable chart success, McPhee finally broke through with a co-lead role on NBC's "Smash," and her acting career has taken the lead ever since. After four years starring on CBS's "Scorpion," McPhee recently made her Broadway debut with a four-month starring role in "Waitress."

Taylor Hicks has suffered a similar fate on the charts, and also enjoyed a successful run on Broadway, as Teen Angel in "Grease." He has continued to release albums and tour, as well as appearing on multiple television shows. His most recent gig is as host of INSP channel's culinary show "State Plate."
Fans on Twitter loved the exchange, with many declaring Hicks the winner of this shade-off. But McPhee had her defenders, as well, with both "Idol" alums getting teased and poked.

The two faced off on season 5 of the show.
By MICHELE AMABILE ANGERMILLER

“American Idol” Season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee has a message for fans: elections have consequences.
To prove her point, McPhee tweeted a photo of herself and “Idol” winner Taylor Hicks on the night she lost to the strong voting bloc of the Soul Patrol.
“Voting matters. Register here,” McPhee wrote as a caption with the hashtag “#midterms2018.”
Hicks shot right back on Twitter, writing, “You’re right, voting DOES matter! But you’re a little late to the party, Kat.” His tweet included a link to a pro-voter registration PSA videoin which he appears, that was posted five months ago on Facebook.

Since the two competed on “Idol” in 2006, both Hicks and McPhee have transitioned to areas of entertainment beyond music.
McPhee has had acting roles on NBC’s “Smash,” the CBS show “Scorpion,” and a starring role on Broadway in “Waitress.” She is engaged to Grammy-winning producer David Foster and the two recently showed up to toast former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Hicks starred as Teen Angel on Broadway in Grease, won a Grammy Award for his participation in a performance of Rebecca Black’s “Friday” (featured on Jimmy Fallon’s “Blow Your Pants Off” comedy album) was the first Idol to headline a residency in Las Vegas (ahead of judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler). He also owns restaurants and is the host of the food and travel show, “State Plate.” The Soul Patrol can see Hicks live on Nov, 29 at City Winery in Nashville where he’ll perform “Night Moves: The Classic Songs of Bob Seger.”

That was unnecessary. It’s been 10 years now, get over it

Voting does matter. While I feel that Taylor Hicks is a worthy winner, the true winner of that season was Chris Daughtry. People didn’t vote thinking he would always be safe and it didn’t happen. He has gone on to have an amazing career though. Katherine McPhee is still a bitter loser, apparantly.

A slight correction: Hicks didn’t individually win a Grammy, but he appeared on the Grammy-winning album. Despite some false perceptions, his music career has been pretty solid, including a #1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and a platinum certified album.

Hicks is the best live performer out there IMO. Live performing is where real talent shows. His recent performances with Umphey’s McGee were great. His State Plate show is really fun to watch. Hope he does more hosting. He deserved every vote he got.

Ms. McPhee is still upset over loosing to Taylor Hicks in a televised talent show?
Wow. Apparently time does not heal all wounds.
My lasting impression of her talent show act was her dad crying every night. The point of her act like so many of the Idol types is her overall dullness.
Nothing really bright about that light. Just another bulb on Broadway.
Taylor Hicks had a lot more gristle and thus stood out. So he has not had as many NBC or Broadway roles as McPhee since that time but he is a far better performer.
A night out with the boys would find me at Taylor Hicks’ rock & roll revue instead of a night of McPhee doing tepid versions of show tunes and standards from the Rodgers & Hart catalogue.
