Meanwhile GT doesn't have enough money to recruit....
A fundraising challenge to increase Georgia Tech’s recruiting staff is more than 90 percent of the way toward being met.
More than $185,000 has been pledged by fans and alumni, money that will be matched on a 50 percent basis by an anonymous donor. Tech has a goal of reaching $300,000 (donations plus match) by next Wednesday (national signing day), which would be enough to fund four recruiting staff positions for the coming year.
Athletic director Todd Stansbury and coach Paul Johnson made public the department’s fundraising challenge on January 6. It’s a two-year program – another $300,000 will need to be raised for 2019 – after which Stansbury anticipates that the athletic department will be able to fund the positions through its annual budget.

Don't worry, they should have enough to cover recruiting in 2020.

It is amazing to me GT would not have enough money to recruit.  Doesn't the ACC have a profit sharing model like the SEC?   Tennessee just announced this past week that, after it's worst season in history, it has a 10.5 million surplus from last season.

Come to think of it, maybe that is why Tennessee sucks.  If the admin knows it is still going to make that type of money whether we win or not there may not be a lot of motivation to sink a bunch of money into the program.

I think UGA's AD wasn't willing to spend the money to win until Smart came along and made him do it.

I have no idea why GT's finances are such a mess.  I know the ACC deal isn't as lucrative and I know they don't bring in funds like Clemson, but they seem to always be broke but never over spent on anything.  Just look at their fan base.  They are right smack dab in the middle of a thriving big city and they can't sell out games.  WTF?

UT announcing ticket prices likely are going up:

“We are looking at that [ticket price increase]; it’s something that’s important, that you stay financially feasible and sound with where you want to be,” Fulmer said. “It’s something you have to look at every year. We have a huge stadium project that’s coming up.”

Former athletic director John Currie made the $340 million Neyland Stadium renovation project — projected to begin this summer and be finished in time for the facility’s 100-year birthday in 2021 — a focal point of his caravan stops last summer.
Again, it just seems wrong that we just had the most disastrous season in the school's history and the admin is increasing prices.  There really is zero motivation at this point to invest tons of money into a coaching staff.

UGA is raising prices too.  I've mentioned this before, our AD is a complete PR disaster.  Whenever he speaks to the fan base he always ends up stepping in dog shit and tracking it all over.  His latest is the ticket price increase.  To buy UGA tickets you must first donate a certain amount of money to a fund.  The tax changes made this donation no longer tax deductible, so the AD recommended fans pay their donation prior to Jan 1st.  He then raised the amount necessary for away game tickets.  Not horrible, but he could have told people so they made the right donation.  Next, he said there was an adjustment to ticket prices in the future.  He alluded that the price could go up or down.  Yes, he mentioned the price could go down.  stop laughing.  Finally, he raises prices of the tickets and justifies it by saying UGA tickets are very cheap compared to other SEC schools.  He forgot to mention that donation thing.  The donation for the cheapest tickets is about the same as the ticket price, so he misrepresented the cost by 50%.  Our own AD thinks we can't do math.

Anyway, a fan did the math for all of the schools.  UGA tickets are actually the most expensive in the conference.  Like I said, our AD is a fucking mess.

btw, don't equate ticket price with the quality of the fans or product.  UGA is right next to Atlanta, so there is a large pool of wealthy ticket buyers.

It is all a mess because some of it is coming down to pure greed.   The same week UT announced they were raising their ticket prices is the same week they announced a 10.5 million surplus from the 2017 season.   Hmmmmmmmm.

I do think the fact the donations are no longer tax deductible is going to affect season ticket sales.  I have personally already discussed this with 3 season ticket holders I know who have been season ticket holders for decades and they are considering not renewing this year.  Now the couple grand donation is out of their pocket.  The other thing that is ticking off UT season ticket holders is the new remodel.   The NCAA is requiring UT to push their stands away from the end zones as it is a safety hazard to players.   Roughly 8 rows in both endzones and corners are being removed.  UT has decided to just push everyone back.  If you used to be on the first row now you are on the 8th and so on.   So for many of these people right about the time UT announces ticket prices are going up they are being told their seats will be worse.  It is FUBAR.

The salaries and contract lengths of football and men’s basketball head coaches and assistant coaches have dramatically increased in recent years and only continue to grow.
Texas A&M made waves in the offseason when it hired former Florida State football head coach Jimbo Fisher to the same position, signing him to a fully guaranteed 10-year, $75 million contract, according to ESPN. Alabama spent $11,132,000 on football head coach Nick Saban last year, according to USA Today head coach salary database.
Though Ohio State pays its coaches in the upper echelon of salaries, it has avoided paying what Athletics Director Gene Smith believes to be unnecessarily large salaries for coaches.
“I don’t even put Texas A&M in our sphere because I’m considering Urban [Meyer]’s situation with three years left on his contract,” Smith said during Ohio State’s Board of Trustees’ Talent and Compensation Committee meeting Thursday. “Talking with [Susan Basso, vice president of human resources] and [Joanna McGoldrick, associate vice president of total rewards], that’s not even someone that we’re comparing with because it’s so ridiculous.
“It’s the same way with Alabama and their total salary. Take it off the sheet because it doesn’t matter. Because it’s just no value to it. It’s a reactionary type of management.”
Gene's gonna be able to not pay Urban Meyer the market rate?  He is either a moron, or....  actually if he really believes that he's a moron.   Meyer will get as much as he wants.

btw, only 3 years left on the contract?

In the "bless their hearts" category Butch Jones picture is STILL on the jumbotron at Neyland.  The admin says there is only a few crains big enough to remove it and they have one on order.  I still can't believe none of the students have vandalized it yet.   Granted, it is not the easiest thing in the world to get to but if those damn engineers at Tech can remove the T from the tower every year surely we can figure out a way to spray paint a mustache on Butch.  How much is a good paint gun?

Anybody seen Jalen Hurts video to Charles Barkley?  They had a bet on the Iron Bowl and since Bama won Hurts had to put on an Auburn jersey, which he did.  He then proceeds to pick up a Bama backpack with the national championship trophy sticking out and walks away with Sweet Home Alabama playing.  Well played, sir.  Well played.

Why call Mullen back when you can have Schianno?

There is some juicy stuff coming out.  I saw some other texts that showed he realized we would reject Schiano and wrote it off as "our people are just crazy."   If you know your base is going to reject someone but you try to hire them anyway you really do deserve to lose your job.  What an idiot.

He really comes off as an idiot.  I saw a text where it was obvious that Miles was trying to talk to him and he wouldn't return the call for example.  I'm not saying Miles is awesome, but he is a helluva lot better that Schianno.  Also, they told him not to not meet with anyone and not offer the job to anyone, and he immediately flew to LA to meet with Leach.  After meeting with Leach he told them about the meeting by saying "Met with Leach.  He would take job if offered".  And they fired him the next morning.

It looks like Currie left them no other option.

An email from Currie's account :
Hello John,
My name is Kyle Vasey and I am an assistant AD for strategic planning at Alabama. Greg Byrne asked me to send you some analysis we performed on head coaches recently. You’ll find an excel spreadsheet which ranks head coaches based on a metric we created called: coaching efficiency. This metric is a weighted score which incorporates various factors such as national championships, final AP ranking, overall win percentage, etc. You’ll also find a pdf file which analyzes coaches based on their previous coaching experience: Power 5 Head Coach, Power 5 Assistant Coach, former NFL head coach, etc
I am happy to answer any questions you might have on the data.
Thanks,
Kyle Vasey

The contract extension for Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has been completed, according to a person familiar with the action. Athletic director Todd Stansbury and Johnson’s Atlanta-based agent Jack Reale had been working on the extension since the 2017 season and reached an agreement in principle in January.

The extension is for an additional two years to his existing contract, pushing out to the 2022 season, which would be Johnson’s 15th at Tech.
Not a lot of HCs can get an extension after failing to go to a bowl game 2 out of the last 3 years.

Tech definitely has low standards for success.   It is the one school sitting right in the middle of one of the biggest recruiting hotbeds in the country that can't win a game.

I don't really hate any of UGA's rivals, and since I have plenty of friends who went to the rival schools I'm generally positive about them.  With that said, I find GT and it's fans hilarious.  They are so delusional and they have the worst little brother complex.

-They think PJ's problem is that everyone that graduates from Tech has to take calculus, but then you remind them that there are degrees at Tech that don't require calculus.
-UGA is good because they cheat, but then you remind them that GT has been caught cheating repeatedly the last 2 decades while UGA has only had minor stuff.
-GT can't recruit because of academics and then you show them how many players on Stanford's roster are from GA.
-My brother inlaw (tech grad) made the comment at Thanksgiving that UGA grads always work for GT grads, and then 10 mins later it came out that his boss and his boss's boss are UGA grads.
-It should be inexcusable for their BB team to suck.  Seriously.  That arena would be packed and crazy if they put a good product on the court.  ATL is a basketball town and they're right there in the middle of it all.
-Their athletic department is broke.  Like seriously broke.  That's hard to do with the crazy money in college sports.  How are y'all the smart ones when you can't even finance an athletic department?

I could go on for hours.

Might as well stick this here since it's the unofficial GT thread.  GT is losing 2 starters.
Gray, a defensive back, has a heart condition and Stickler, an offensive lineman has an undisclosed condition.

Gray was a two-year starter at free safety and appeared in 33 games over three seasons as a Yellow Jacket.

Stickler appeared in 20 games over three seasons at Georgia Tech and made 10 starts at right tackle as a junior in 2017. He was an integral part of an offensive line that helped pave the way for Tech to rush for 307.4 yards per game (fifth nationally) in 2017.
Wish the kids the best, and hopefully they can get their degrees while on medical scholarship.

The facts are starting to come out about the former Clemson football players armed robbery.
According to documents and surveillance footage obtained from the Clemson Police Department, the three men pulled into a city parking deck on the afternoon of March 28, were recorded on camera exiting Fuller’s white Mercedes, pulled hoods over their heads, then allegedly proceeded to knock on the door of an apartment that police say belongs to a current Clemson football player.
An unidentified 20-year-old victim who says she is the teammate’s girlfriend told police she was napping in the back bedroom around 4 p.m. when she heard the knock. She answered the door and was allegedly robbed at gunpoint.
One suspect, she said, had a gun and went to the kitchen for cash in a cabinet above the refrigerator. She considered running outside but said she saw the third suspect by the stairs, whom she assumed was the lookout man.
Knowing her boyfriend kept a gun in the nightstand, the victim told police she ran to the back bedroom where she wrestled with the other suspect on the bed before he also took a large amount of cash from that nightstand. According to documents, the victim said she thought the men were football players.
Football player with a mercedes, armed with guns, rob another football player, know exactly where large amounts of cash are stored.

Truly is Auburn with a lake.

Just for laughs I thought I would share a comment I just read over at Volnation.  Someone started a thread stating we would get 10 wins next season.  Someone else replied with " I will have what he is drinking" to which someone else wrote "Don't do it. It's equal parts Windex, antifreeze, and kerosene in a 7 Eleven Big Gulp cup."   It made me laugh.

When does UT get their first SEC win?  Here are the chances in order:

Florida
UGA
Auburn
Bama
SCAR
Kentucky
Missouri
Vandy

That's a tough start!
