Tips on skinning

I've found a skin I've taken a liking to, and I'd like to alter it a bit - namely coloring and maybe a bit more detail. I've isolated the jpegs i need to fix up and everything, but the actual texture in the photo is ... nuanced? There's like, folding in the cloth I don't want to mess up, but when I attempt to brush next to it or just bucket a new layer and then overlay it with the original, it's pretty sloppy.

Just curious if anyone had any tips for me on the finer points of working GIMP, or any suggestions. The pic in question:


Finally figured out recoloring for skinning, so that's nice. Next stop: modelling.
