this is how we make our mark

Although far from as popular as its North End competition, the U-567, the Juvente Club is a place that doesn't differentiate between rich and poor. Most people can get in, but it is a given that a person on the U-567 list will not be going here.

Jenna’s eyes widened before she burst into another belly-laugh. ”A jackhammer? Is that what the kids are calling it these days? In that case, the chastity belt has no hope.” She wondered for a second if he had caught the sexual innuendo before he’d dropped the line but then realized she didn’t care and that it had to be one of the funniest things she’d heard all year.

Tonight had turned out a lot differently than Jenna had expected. She had met people at a club before, danced a little, had her fun and then called it a night and gone home with the girls. She had half-expected the same thing with Lanny, to be honest, but she was enjoying this much more. The banter with him came easily, even now as the fresh air was starting to sober her up. (Not much, however. She still couldn’t be trusted behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.)

She chuckled at his confession. ”Well, I’d say that’s a shame, but it would be a lie. How else would I get to hit on you?”

“You’ve got a point there,” Lanny said, grinning. “I guess we’ll just have to agree that the stars and everything else in the universe aligned itself tonight, and higher powers intervened to give me a good hair day and convince you to put on that dress.”

He paused, tilting his head to the side and reached out a hand to her waist, where he pinched the fabric of the dress between his thumb and index finger. It was smooth to the touch, slippery, and the heat from her body penetrated the flimsy material easily. He pretended to study it for a moment, then threw an impish glance at Jenna’s face.

“I remember a different line now, but I think I’m too much of a gentleman to say it. Or I’d at least prefer that you think that.”

Jenna laughed and nodded in agreement at his statement. The world was certainly working in their favour, and her dress wasn’t doing a bad job for her either, evidently. She followed the trail of Lanny’s hand to her waist smirked as he pinched the thin fabric.

I remember a different line now… Jenna laughed out loud again and shook her head. So chivalry wasn’t dead. Not wholly. This time it was the thought that counted, or, not voicing the thought, as it were. Jenna took a step closer to him, the corner of her lips turned up in a smirk.

”Can I guess?” She didn’t wait for an answer. ”That it would look better on a variety of surfaces, mostly somewhere in your dwelling, but not exactly on?” Jenna hooked her index fingers in the front two belt loops of his pants and stepped closer. ”Did I get it?”

Lanny grinned as she stepped closer to him. The look in her eyes was putting all sorts of interesting thoughts in his head, and the words coming out of her mouth weren’t doing anything to stop them.

“Didn’t I just say that I was too much of a gentleman?” He laughed and put a hand in the small of her back, drawing her closer until their torsos were touching (at least kind of, sort of… she really was teeny tiny.)

“But I can tell you that it’s getting very hot.” He paused, a sheepish half-smile playing at the corner of his mouth. “Pun not intended.” Another pause. “Okay, a little bit intended. But mostly, it was a happy coincidence.”

Happy birthday, darling!

Didn’t I just say I was too much of a gentleman? Jenna laughed and eased towards him as he pulled her closer. His hand covered that majority of the small of her back, and she couldn’t remember ever feeling so dwarfed against someone before. But she had always told herself that height was a state of mind, and right now she felt at least seven foot seven.

”I don’t believe itcounts as being a gentleman if you were thinking it, Lanny.” The gentle taunt was provided with a cheeky wink. ”But I’m okay with it. Just so we’re clear there.”

Jenna had never had much time for gentlemen. She had been around rough, gruff men her entire life and while that had never been completely desirable to her, Lanny so far seemed like the perfect combination of everything that was desirable to her. He had her laughing again – if anyone could appreciate a good pun it was her. ”Seriously, where have you been hiding?”

“Sure it counts,” Lanny said, his eyes wide. “You’re assuming that a gentleman is someone who doesn’t think it, but darlin’, if he’s not thinking it, he’s either a flaming homosexual, or just not that into you. Honestly, you can’t give a man flack for what he’s thinking in the privacy of his own mind! A gentleman is just a regular old asshole who’s learned to not tell you all the filthy things he wants to do to you if you let him.”

He shook his head as if this was the greatest insult that had ever been directed towards him, but a quirk at the corner of his mouth belied his indignation. “I’m neither, by the way. Just in case you were wondering.”

To the question of where he had been hiding, he shrugged. “Here and there and everywhere. I get around. It’s you who’s been hard to find.” He paused, looking down at her. “Seriously though. Aren’t you cold in that?” He ran a hand down the small of her back. Though her flesh was separated from his by the fabric of her dress, “cold” was not the word that came to mind when he touched her, though that flimsy bit of clothing could hardly be expected to battle the elements successfully.

“Do you want to get out of here. My place isn’t that far from here.”

Sure it counts. You’re assuming that a gentleman is someone who doesn’t think it, but darlin’, if he’s not thinking it, he’s either a flaming homosexual, or he’s just not that into you…I’m neither, by the way. Just in case you were wondering.

Jenna listened, eyes wide with laughter before she let it sound from the very tips of her toes. ”You’ve given me a whole new outlook on life. And here I was, thinkin’ I was just some stubborn Italian chick with it alllllll figured out. I didn’t wonder it for a second, for the record.” She flourished her hand dramatically, but let it fall back to the muscular surface of his chest while the laughter still danced in her eyes.

It was inevitable though. The thin fabric of the dressed combined with the cool breeze that passed through the beach, added to the feel of his hands on her had left a layer of goosebumps on her skin. She couldn’t quite tell if the tingling sensation that felt like it was starting from the tips of her toes was because of him or because of the cold, but she could feel the small trembling beginning and knew it was because she was starting to get cold. This was where she made her decision for the night. Either she went home or she didn’t - she knew damn well her girls would cover for her.

Jenna nodded. ”Sure, let’s get outta here. I’m much less entertaining when I’m frozen half to death.”

A slow grin spread slowly across Lanny’s features as he took her hand in his. “So you’re saying it gets better than this? Not to call you a liar or anything, but I find that hard to believe.”

He gave her a little tug. “Guess there’s only one way to find out, though. It’s this way.” He navigated the familiar streets through South End, towards his apartment. At first he kept up a steady stream of jokes to keep her laughing, but as they neared his place, he found that other thoughts encroached.

“Here,” he said, finally, stopping in front of a large building that had seen better days. He let go of her hand to rummage through his pockets for his keys. “Come on.”

They scaled the stairs together, and he unlocked the door, letting her go first. The door slammed behind them. “I live on the sixth floor,” he said, a little sheepishly as he gestured towards a second flight of stairs. “Sorry.” He held out his hand to her again, and pulled her up on her tiptoes to give her a kiss.

Jenna enjoyed the walk to his apartment building. This guy was the never ending well of humour, and it was never too much and she was never bored. Holding his hand walking down the street, a small part of her felt like she had known him for years. The playful banter kept her interested and by the time they reached his building, any sense of doubt had left her completely. He didn’t live in the nicest part of town, but she didn’t feel unsafe.

”My, what a gentleman. Thank you.” Jenna snaked in in front of him but was caught by a larger hand grasping hers. She smiled and wound her arms around his neck. The smile stayed put as he pressed his lips against hers. Jenna wound her fingers into the soft blonde hair at the back of his head and parted her lips to nip on his bottom lip.

”What’s your quickest time, getting upstairs?” She mumbled against his lips, pressing her own against them again. ”Think you’re up for setting a record?”

Lanny grinned against her mouth, their lips touching in the ghost of their kiss. His hands were on her hips, just on that enticing curve that turned into her narrow waist. "I've never timed myself before," he said. "No one's ever accused me of being in too good a shape though. But who knows, maybe with the right incentive..."

He cocked one eyebrow as he stepped back from her, his head tilted slightly to one side. Another one of his mischievous expressions spread itself over his face. "Last one to the top is a dirty, rotten egg!"

The last word wasn't even out of his mouth before he was dashing up the stairs, using his long legs to take three steps at a time.

Everything about him was enticing. From the deep tone in his voice to the delicious taste of his breath on her lips, he had her hook, line and sinker. I’ve never timed myself before, no one’s ever accused me of being in too good shape though. But who knows, maybe with the right inventive…

Jenna giggled and leaned up on her tiptoes again to brush her lips against his neck, but seemingly, in a flash, he was gone, taunting her as he went. Her jaw hit the floor in mock surprise. ”Cheater!” She called out after him as she moved just as quickly as her much tinier legs would carry her. One of the benefits to having never taken up her father’s age-old smoking habit though was the seemingly endless lung capacity for a human her size, and she wasn’t far behind him as he reached the stairs.

It was hardly lady-like, and had her mother been around to see her now, she would have given Jenna the cold, hard stare-down, but instead of letting him win, Jenna raced the last few steps and jumped on his back, wrapping her arms around his shoulders to keep herself up. ”I don’t take too kindly to that you know! Taking advantage, and you seemed like such a nice guy.”

Lanny stumbled slightly under the unexpected weight on his back, but quickly regained his balance. Hooking his arms underneath her thighs, he hoisted her further up into a more comfortable position.

"I wasn't cheating!" he protested. "You snooze, you lose! Besides, if I was cheating, what do you call this?" He gave her another little boost to mark his point, but nevertheless started to climb the stairs.

”Yeah, yeah. I call this taking advantage of a good opportunity!” She squealed a little as he hoisted her up higher on his back, following it with a laugh. ”It’s easier for people with circus legs to get up these things. Takes half the time and half the effort. Really, I should thank you. You’ve gone from cheater to gentleman in five seconds flat. Roll with it, trust me.”
