The shoreline on South End is rocky and not ideal for swimming, and hence the pier was built so that the South Enders too could enjoy a bit of salty ocean air without going too far out of their way. During weekends, it's a hot spot of activity: families with small children come here to enjoy an ice cream from one of the many carts along the pier, teenagers come to just hang around and watch the people passing by, and at night, it's a haven for blossoming romance.
