Hi, everyone. In researching my husband's family tree on Ancestry dot com, I have come upon an interesting dilemma-I traced his family back to an Alexander Archebald McCoy, whose father was James Mackey McCoy (m. Jennett Wallace). After finding this information, I came upon a book titled "The Book of MacKay", written by an Angus MacKay in the late 1800s. This book outlines the entire MacKay family tree; however, there is NO James Mackey McCoy. I have found this James Mackey McCoy on MANY family trees with connections to my husband's family; however, if a scholar on his family has no record of this person, where did so many folks go wrong? James Mackey McCoy was purportedly the son of William MacKay (m. Elizabeth Corbet) who was the son of Donald MacKay of Borley (m. Christiana Munro). I'm new to genealogy, and this has me totally stumped. Can anyone help me figure out how this went sideways? Here is the link to the book:https://archive.org/details/bookofmackay00mack

So sorry, my e-mail is iluvamystery1971@bellsouth.net. A lady on Ancestry.com's forum attempted to help me with this tree; however, she ran into the same issue I did. I am posting the family tree here, in hopes that someone knows where I went wrong. All of the information appears to be solid, until you reach James Mackey McCoy. There is NO record of him outside of family trees.

Familysearch.org has free memberships and searches the LDS database. I did a quick search for James Mackey McCoy and got a full family tree back to the early 1400s.

Christopher, never tried that site before and gave it a whirl. Am lucky to have already stumbled on a detailed family tree some unknown individual had done of my family and posted on line some years ago. It went back to an ancestor born in 1775. Did more digging based on that info. However, info on this site seems inaccurate for my family in spots. Lists a boatload of kids for my paternal great-grandfather he never had and left out the 3 he did have.
