After reading the manga and realizing how much was cut from the Ghost in the Shell movie in favor of philosophy, I was sour on the whole prospect of GitS as an anime. GitS: SAC came along, and I approached it with mixed feelings. I actually had the first 15 or so episodes for a good 6 months before I convinced myself to sit down and watch one all the way through.
It was great. Unlike the movie, the episodes actually focused on the characters and Section 9 and not some disembodied philosophical bullshit. There was philosophy here and there, but the show presented it in small doses, only when it was actually applicable to the story, and never attempted to beat you over the head with it. The story is well told throughout the 26 episodes, the animation is relatively good and the music, with the exception of the ending theme, is all pretty fantastic.
The one odd point in the entire show is Kusanagi's outfit relative to everyone else's. Everyone else in the show, women included, wear regular business and casual attire, where as Kusanagi walks around in thigh-highs, a one-piece bathing suit and a leather jacket. Its hot, and she looks good, but its just weird by contrast. not allowed

My friend and I started watching recently too, and we have more or less the same comments. I can't help but laugh every time they zoom in on her outfit.
The opening title theme song is awesome though. Are there more songs like that I can easily get?

The whole soundtrack to SAC is just awesome. Even my _dad_ likes it.

          I second the OST.
I haven't even seen the series yet, and I love the music! My friend sent me the opening song ages ago and it just stuck in my head.. MRk MRK n FnK Mz

                (Just wrapped up disc two).
I do admit that these relatively straightforward storylines are a nice change of pace from Oshii's take on GitS, especially when compared to Innocence, so I guess we somewhat agree on that one.
At this point though, I'm trying to figure out what this newfound obsession with Salinger is all about.

It's good to see that we both agree that Oshii's work on GitS, in general, has been @#%$. :D not allowed

In that case, I'll have to agree to disagree.
