Game: Star Fighter
Disks: 1
Does any one here remember that OLD black and white Star Wars arcade games, which players flew around, shot ships, and destroyed the Death Star overand over and over again. Until we died. God, games have gotten better than that since then! I believe that was the first Star Wars game. (I saw it at Disney Land, long ago) and each time I play a new Star Wars game, (Ever since Episode 1 a new one has been released almost every month :-p) I remember that old B&W Star Wars arcade game. Always remembering that games used to be like that A man, did I remember that old game so much, when comparing to Lucas Arts new Episode 1 dog fighting game: Star Fighter.
A note: This is a LONG review. I will always do LONG reviews, I like to type. All chv staff members please go to the exit on your right ;-)
GAMEPLAY:
In Star Fighter, players control one of three ships. There is your typical Bravo Pilot, who controls youre average Naboo Fighter. A mercenary-of-sorts, who flies a stealthy ship. And theres the loud Space Pirate, which controls a big-bulky bomber. I cant fully remember the names of most of these ships because theyre new. (You are NOT given the opportunity to play as one of the characters thru out the entire game. You switch between them, during game-play) this game plays a lot like Rouge Squadron. You fly, you shoot. Whats great about this game is that Lucas Arts made the frame rate, up to speed. I never fully experienced much slowdown. In other words, during later levels youre ship (In true Star Wars fashion) is bombarded with fifty-or-so enemy aircraft. With barely a hint of slowdown :-) The mission varitey is amazing. At first youre protecting a ship, while another docks with it to steal supplies. After protecting this ship, you have to quickaly destroy it. And it goes beyond that! I dont want to spoil some of the missions. So Ill keep my mouth shut ;-) Sometime, it becomes a simple blast-athon But I do have to admit, this has to be the best flying Star Wars game ever.

GRAPHICS:
How did these guys do the terrain?! You know the graphics are good, when first time playing it you want to stop and check everything out. It has a photo-quality look to it that totally surprised me. And it gets better in space the planets look real. Not cutout textures to fill in the area. It fact, its hard to recognize any reoccurring textures on the ground, or in space. The ships are detailed nicely. (With kick a$$ lighting effects on the ships) Now here is my complaint: The cut-scenes suck. And thats saying it nicely. Yeah, I know these guys arent Square Soft but PLEASE! The characters look horrible, and deformed. Dont buy this game expecting quality Star Wars CG here.
SOUND:
Voices are pretty bad. The main characters dont surprise me at all. Your wingmen, or fellow fighters on the other hand give a large amount of depth in this game. Signaling what to do, who to protect. Continue the story, or just talk. With the cool Star Wars music in the background it really feels that you are in a Star Wars movie That is until a main character begins to talk.
VIDIOTS TIME TO PICK OUT THE PROBLEMS:
Did you know this is my favorite part of the review? :-)
Lucas Arts has FINALLY made a high-quality Episode 1 Star Wars game. And you would think just because Jarr-Jarr is not in this it would be perfect. Like I said, the CG is really bad. I found in the first opening scene, one of the main characters actually floating off the ground. That is inexcusable! The voices (for the main characters) suck also. There. in the lower. Quadrant THE GAME IS SHORT. Damn, you fu&^%*$ developers making fu&^#$% two-day-to-beat games, on the Ps2! FU&*!!! . Ah, anyway. It takes about a week to unlock everything. (Bonus missions) But other than that theres barely any replay value. Which seem's to plaque almost all Star Wars games.
FINAL VERDICT:
Its a good game. Unless you can go against the character voices. Thankfully in the missions they dont talk that much, and you can listen to (the good voice actors) your wingmen talk back and forth to you. Its a quality Star Wars title, which is rare these days. Go rent it, its great. If youre a Star Wars fanatic, go buy it. The replay sucks thou.
