America does get most of the benefits when compared to the rest of the world, but I think that maybe in matters of importance in the game industry, it's a bit harder to decide which one is more important. I imagine that most of the profit comes from the rest of the world, cause more people (and thus more money) inhabit them. But that's just my opinion...

The US is more important, huh? I would dispute that. Despite the fact that we don't get the same prioritising as people in America, I read recently that PAL region gamers now represent a bigger market than the US, so with all due respect I don't know if it is more important, despite the fact that it is still enjoys many benefits from when it did make up a bigger region than PAL. *katyjag preparing to be flamed by everyone else, but that's what I heard, and I gotta stick up for PAL countries sorry if I offend anyone*

three main standards for broadcasting tv signals and stuff are used throughout the world. these standards are not compatible with one another. in other words, an NTSC vhs tape can't be played in a PAL vcr, a PAL video can't be played in a SECAM vcr, etc.
NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) is what's used in north america, and other places. it's used in countries where the power frequency is 60Hz (30 fps)
PAL (Phase Alternative Lines) is used in countries where the power frequency is 50Hz (25 fps)
SECAM (SEquential Coleur Avec Memoire) is a french thing motivated by politics to protect their domestic manufacturing companies
                  So there's my US$0.02 :-)

                    So close.
Actually (although you probably already know), NTSC is 60 FIELDS per second (each field is an interlaced frame, first odd, then even). Every 1/60th of a second, one frame hits your screen, and every 1/30th of a second, two interlaced fields hit your screen, and basically form a frame. So, even though 60fields/sec~30frames/sec, its still not 30 FULL frames per second (like film, which is 24 FULL frames per second).
Same goes with PAL, just different numbers.
