on the anime board at chv, someone was interested in watching anime. he was asking what he should see first, so i decided to write this "primer". since chv is closing, and i didn't want to lose this, i have it posted here. enjoy :-)
hmm personally, the first anime i watched were movies, not series. if you're new to anime, it's best to start with movies instead of series. don't ask me why, it's just how i feel. now anyways, when i first got interested in anime, i watched Tenchi Muyo In Love, Akira and Ghost in the Shell, last two of which are must-see's.
after you have decided you want to watch more, start watching some anime series. for now, try to see if you can find a local fellow otaku that will lend you some of his/her videos. oh yeah, if at all possible, STAY AWAY FROM ENGLISH DUBBED ANIME! this is anime with english language voice-overs. STICK TO SUBTITLED ANIME!! i can not stress this enough. sure, you'll have to pay more for subtitled anime, but i'll assure you that it's well worth it to pay the extra US$5 to US$10.
personally, i don't like the anime they show on Cartoon Network's toonami. i'm sure that Outlaw Star is an ok anime, but i watched it for 1 minute, and was just totally sickened. horrible english voice-overs (this is a good reason why to stick with subtitles!). Tenchi Muyo is ok i guess.. i'm also not a fan of any of the dragonball series. i think it's a terrible anime.. i guess maybe that's because i need anime with an actual plot, not just mindless fighting..
currently i'm watching Love Hina (funny story, kinda like a japanese dating sim from the male point of view), Trigun (also a great series), Cowboy Bebop (again, great), Irresponsible Captain Tylor (weird story about a kid who's a captain..), Weiss Kreuz (story about secret heroes who work at a flower shop), and Yu Yu Hakusho (story about a troublemaker teen who dies saving a little kid, and realizes he shouldn't be dead). hmm what else.. oh yeah of course, you have to see Shinseiki (Neon Genesis) Evangelion. this has got to be one of the best (if not THE best) anime series out there. thick, deep plots, with meanings on many levels. it will keep you thinking.. and Serial Experiments Lain. this is sorta like an x-files type series that's really hard to follow. be prepared to pay close attention or you can miss something altogether. i've watched it over and over again and i still don't get it..
well that's all i can really think of right now, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask :-)
ja ne, minna-san!
So there's my US$0.02 :-)
