Okay, here is my little review on the basis of the three or four hours I spent this evening playing SSX Tricky that I got out on rental.
Disclaimer *All opinions expressed within this review reflect the opinions of katyjag and if you go out and buy this game then think it's crappy it's not my fault cause I'm telling you I don't know what I'm talking about*
First off, I have to say I was a huuuge fan of the original, so my whether this will effect my review I don't know. I guess everyone who is interested will know by now that Tricky is a re-vamp of the first SSX. In my opinion, that is a bit unfair: it's more of a step further than Tekken Tag Tournament was from Tekken 3, let's put it that way. One big change is the interface of the whole game. Everything is bigger, flashier and with more sounds.
About the new features: the rivalry between characters is fun, if not a bit pointless. The cut scenes get annoying once you've seen them before, but they do add the one think the orginal lacked as far I was concerned, depth in the characters. Uber-tricks are very enjoyable the first few times you see them, but they do actually also affect the way you play the game. Instead of using your boost up whenever you feel like it, you have to be more strategic about saving it to fill the "tricky" gauge up. The DVD extras are worth a look, especially the jukebox feature where you can play full versions of all the songs from Tricky. The extras mainly include making-of videos on the various elements of the game other than the jukebox and a couple of trailers for other games.
The tracks have been improved a lot, imo. Some of them (eg Tokyo Megaplex and Pipedream) have undergone massive changes. There's a big focus on railsliding now, especially in the showoff events where it's rails everywhere. This could be good or bad depending on how good your balance is.
The soundtrack is fantastic, if you like housey/hip-hop/dance (I do!!) The remix of It's Tricky by Run DMC is so totally old-skool it hurts.
There are a few tracks from the original on there, but remixed, along with a lot of new stuff. For all the hype made of the celebrity voices, I still like Moby and Kaori.
Having characters be able to shout at each other during the race is a novel addition, but the novelty value might wear off for some people soon enough.
On the whole, I like this game a lot. If you loved SSX, then it's prolly worth your while renting it out to see what it's like. There is sufficient there to make me want to buy it, even though I have the original, but some people might disagree.img>
