Game: Red Faction
Disks: 1 DVD

Once upon a time there was a game called Half-life. It changed the FPS genre forever, finally ending the thousands of mediocre Doom clones, which almost destroyed the genre. Now, Volition creators of the average console/pc R.P.G. hybrid game Summoner (mouthful) have created what they call the next generation of FPS. Instead they created a good (but not revolutionary) FPS, that every PS2 gamer should at least rent. In this review I will talk what stops Red Faction from being the next Half-Life, as the developers wanted to have. And why Red Faction is a good game, and shows what FPS will become more in the future. (Baby steps)
GAMEPLAY:
You are Parker, a miner that slaves away deep underground on the planet of Mars. Ultor a large mining corporation has taken over Mars and treats the workers very poorly. Guards beat on miners, workers never have time to get any time for themselves and a mysterious plaque is killing miners left and right. Its time for an uprising. Its time for the miners to rebel! Andyeah, you get the idea. Defeat the bad Ultor Corporation; stop the plaque, save the world.
Anyway, the game at first had some problems in the controls. Now, Im not going to get into yet another lengthy debate in which everyone can scream there god damn opinion whether a mouse is the only way to go bull sh--. To be honest, we all know the right answer (yes) and I dont want this to be the start of a thirty-reply conversation like it always does on a pc gamer fourm. Ok, enough with my bitching Red Faction has good controls. They just really need to get used to, about at least an hour of playing. The game has a lock on feature so your weapons would automatically stick to an enemy for easier accuracy. That is great, BUT you will never truly experience the Solider of Fortune body shooting when your gun is always pointing at a guys gut. Thankfully, this can be turned off. There are also a lot of vehicles that you can enter and control to break up the brainless shooting.
I know you want to hear all about Geo-Mod, and yes its great In death match. Red Factions engine was built by a great piece of code called Geo-Mod. The ability to destroy everything you see, sadly you only get to use this in some areas. Very disappointing, yet its used a lot in death match. Which is good. Geo-Mod, when used correctly is amazing. And should be used better in another game. In all, Red Faction fells like a Half-Life mod with good graphics and vehicles. Thats not a bad thing. It was a fun experience.
GRAPHICS:
There are scenes in which Red Faction looks bad. There are time when Red Faction can be utterly amazing, surpassing graphics in FPS for all consoles and PC games. The fact that the PC game and the PS2 game are almost identical is a definite sell. Characters look very life-like in this game, unlike Summoner the characters look like actual people (unlike those guys that look as if they were on crack in Summoner)
SOUND:
The voice acting is good, nothing superior but very interesting. While EOS sounds pretty lame, supporting characters such as Hedrix and Capek are good. The guards and mercenaries are another story. They constantly say the same things over and over again to the point of boredom. It seems the only really imposing thing that they can taught you with is scum Oh well
VIDIOTS TIME TO PICK OUT THE PROBLEMSJ:
Red Faction tries to blend a lot of genres of FPS together. You get Deus Ex radio messages. You get
Half-life like action. And you get Tribes like vehicles. And a great Geo-Mod engine which is never used properly. Which sucks. They even thru in some stealth missions, which totally suck. The fact that you will usually running around shooting everything in sight is not my idea of stealth. The developers could have easily given you all your weapons instead of a crappy silencer, and you (like the entire game) running around gunning everything in sight. Its very humorous. The fact you can pick up bodies is never used at all in the game, which is pretty lame.
FINAL VERDICT:
If you havent played Half-Life, Red Faction will be great. If you have, this game will be fun for a while. You got a Total Recall setting with half-life game play. Its good.

I played this game for 2 seconds (to be exact, about 12). All I can say is it seemed hard to control.

Or maybe you should take a bit more than 12 seconds to LEARN the controls. I have never played Red Faction, but I know that 12 seconds doesn't give much of a basis for judging ANYTHING. Play the game a bit more, then maybe the controls might seem a bit easier....

Yeah I WILL. It was short, but fun. I just did not have the time to keep playing. I had to go.

MoonDust, this game is exactly that. It takes quite a while to get use to the controls, after you get used to it there is now problem. Or you can try the PC version, which is almost identical to the Ps2 version.

i rented this at blockbuster a while back
the controls do take a bit getting used to. they're a bit harder than timesplitters' controls, but the thing is that you DO get used to them.
the graphics are pretty nice, although there is a bit of slowdown at times. while messing around, i found out that there's only a certain amount of map you can "burrow" with the rocket launcher. after you deform a large chunk of the map, you'll find that you can't deform any more. i wanted to see how far you could burrow into the walls with the rocked launcher, and i found out that after a while, i couldn't burrow any deeper, to test whether or not it was because there's a certain "depth" you can burrow into the edge of the map, i restarted and started littering the entire map with craters. a little while later i couldn't deform any more of the map, so there is indeed a "max deform percentage" in maps.
it's still a fun game though
So there's my US$0.02 :-)
