"Their different styles have a negative influence on the "final fantasy sound", if I can call it that.
Though this is just my opinion and others might say that the music from FF needed some innovation, I think the FFX OSV is the least of all FF OSVs."
Nothing wrong with distorted punk rock music :-)

I don't think it's really fair to judge the OST unless you've played through the entire game. Even though some OSTs are good enough to stand by their own right, the majority are just made to accompany the game/movie etc... (ie: when you listen to the OST, it brings back memories of certain scenes)
FFVIII OST had some great melodies on it, but a lot of it (to the average Joe who hasn't played FFVIII) would sound dull and boring. But to me, someone who played FFVIII through many times, the tunes bring back heaps of memories, and that's what I love so much about it.
From what I've heard of the FFX OST, it is deffinately a new sound to Final Fantasy. Music enhances gameplay, it creates atmosphere and emotion.. so that needs to be taken into account when you judge it's music, judge it on how effective it is in the GAME, not on how pretty it makes you feel.MRk MRK n FnK Mz

I agree with BuMz 100%. One of the best examples I can think of is the Opera scene from FF6. It's a shitty little midi that can't stand up to the sound quality of todays music, but I blast it whenever it comes onto a netstation because it's one of those memory things BuMz was talking about.
I too like Suteki Da Ne.

IMO one can judge an OSV without playing the game.... though you're right it's meant to accompany certain scenes, in the end it IS music and music can be judged without seeing images. The FF VIII OSV for example; I bought it before I played the game (like I do with all FF OSV's) and I really enjoyed the better part of it, while when I bought FF X OSV I enjoyed about a third of the entire OSV....
NEway the rock track is indeed a welcome surprise. The ending theme is also very beautiful as are some of the songs of prayer.
Suteki Da Ne is absolutely one of the best tracks on it with a very good violin solo.
To get back to the point: wether or not you can judge an OSV without having seen the accompanying images, what I was trying to make clear was that the FF X OSV is least of all FF OSVs.

I guess if you want to judge the OST just as is, without having played through the game, that's your choice. I'll be interested to know how you rate it after you DO play FFX through though..

FF10's music is fine. I personally like the chocobo theme. I don't know if Angeles is totally right, but I would think OST's that can stand alone as great music would be better than music you wouldn't want to listen to when not playing the game. It's the whole reason we buy Original Soundtracks right?
I have barely played Final Fantasy Tactics, but I bought the OST because the music was rousing or beautiful, not because I liked the game. I have listened to 10 percent of the tracks on there while actually playing the game. Would the soundtrack be ten times more enjoyable to listen to if I were to play the game all the way through? Maybe. But OST's are a stand-alone product, and I can say the music is wonderful or crap because I paid the money to buy it.
Luckilly the music is wonderful.-Spok-

I was thinking about it, and this can really be argued both ways. On the one hand, you could say that having played the game ones judgement as to the quality of the OST would be clouded by scenes in the game. IE, it may not be that good, but remembering scenes that went along with it could make it great to someone. On the other hand, you could say that it's original intention is to be played during certain scenes during the game, giving some sort of emotion to them. IE, it may not be that good, but the music is supposed to accompany something rather than stand alone. Y'know?
