Well I finished it. With minimal help with a walk-thru.
So I need to type shit about it. Write random stuff. Like a review. Its amazing how my mind connected the dots with that thought. My mind is like a whirlpool of knowledgeOr something like that.
This was a review of metroid prime wasnt it?
Thats what the topic says.
I guess I should begin it.
Samus has just finished beating the shit out of Mother Brain from the 1st Metroid game. (Imagine a gigantic brainyou already knew? Oh, I thought the title of Mother Brain wasnt obvious enough. Thought I wouldyou know what, ill just shut up.) And now is after the rest of the space pirates who happen to lead her to a nice little planet originally called Tallon IV.
(You know, because Tallon III is a pretty boring place to set a game. Its like the Canada of Tallon IV.)
So Samus runs around Tallon IV kicking space pirate booty, taking names, and learning about her Chozo heritage. The Chozo were a bird like race that used to live on Tallon IV. But there not there anymore, because a gigantic meteor crashed on the planet that also happened to carry an evil substance called Phazon which screwed everything up.
For more information on the story, read the manual. Its that small cool booklet that comes with the game.
Of course the big thing about this game is the fact its a first person shooter. The original Metroid games on the NES and SNES were all side scrolling 2D platformers.
There were a lot of fans of the original games that were how you would say, pissed, when they learned there beloved game franchise was FINALLY getting a makeover as a first person shooter. And the developers were going to be a bunch of unknown guys
Well they pulled it off.
Because its not a first person shooter.
Its a first person adventure.
And I want to make that clear.
People that dont see that are stupid.
Do you think Metroid Prime is just a first person shooter?
Well guess whatYou are stupid. You are a stupid, ignorant person that needs to be shot.
If your name is silverthornne, and write reviews on the Game Faqs reviews board and is trying to compare this game with a game that plays or acts nothing like it. (Namely Deus ExI know what the fuck?) www.gamefaqs.com/console/...49478.html then you need some help because youre thinking to hard. Slow down your thoughts dude.
(Read this fucktards review. Retro Studios has taken Metroid and turned it into a FPS (there is no such genre as a FPA so don't bother me with this stupid nonsense See and you think Im stupid. Look at that stupid fuck. Funny, funny, ill be coming back to his review in a bit to make more fun of it. Cause hes REALLY stupid. And stupid people should be made fun of. Like Bush.) www.gamefaqs.com/console/...46649.html
I realized that this was more of an adventure game when I reached the Chozo Ruins level. The door opened, I walked in, and my jaw hit the floor. It was gorgeous. Metroid Prime doesnt have bump mapping, but damn, it can get away with a lot.
I reminded me of a time when I played Riven (Myst 2) a long time ago, and looked out across the pre-rendered static islands and said. WOW.
I felt the same way back then when I walked out into that area.
Adventure games have a unique feel to them. You cant see it in video clips. Its hard to describe, and immersive feel. Its the same odd feel you get when you play Ico, or Myst. And now Metroid Prime.
Its like magic *poof*
Anyway, Metroid Prime like other Metroid games does not have levels.
Sure there are different areas in the game, but like the other Metroid games youll be revisiting these areas so often you it will feel like one area. There is a lot of backtracking in Metroid Prime like every other Metroid game. If you dont like revisiting an area over ten times, dont bother with this game.
There is no real direction with this game, like other Metroid games. You cant get into some areas without some power-ups, but overall the game has a great non-linear feel to it.
Combat is not like other person shooters, there is a lock on systemA good one. Dont cringe. Considering most monsters in this game attack you via melee attacks and wouldnt be affected by head shots the lock on target system works great.
The C stick selects your different beam weapons, and while some are more powerful than others you will be constantly switching between them. Some enemies are only affected by certain weapons while some doors cant be open with others. So even once you get the final beam weapon you still be switching back to your trusty old power beam. You can charge in a ball of energy, like the original Metroid games. You can even pull off cool looking combo attacks and shoot missiles. Fun, fun, fun.
There are also different visors. The scan visor lets you scan computer systems and read what the evil alien pirates are doing. Ign claims that this game gives you the greatest presentation for a story via these boring texts. This game is great, but in regards to the storyIts okay. Nothing groundbreaking here dude.
You can use your scan visor to see weaknesses for aliens.
They also have a thermal vision, and an x-ray vision. (See invisible enemies, and see thru wallsO.o.O)
You can also jump into a morph ball to get threw some of these areas. There are some really excellent puzzles that utilize this. Im not going to talk much about the morph ball; in fact Im going to stop talking about it now because I dont want to spoil it. LUCKY YOU!
Most of the game is wandering around, trying to figure out where you should go next. Combat is there, but it feels almost like a second thought other than the main focus of the game. Which it should be. That said, there are some excellent fights to be had in this game. It has something for everyone, amazing.
Sound. Your either going to love it or be an Omniphagos. What is an Omniphagos? You did read that Game Faqs review above of that guy whos a moron. Remember that I was going to make fun of this idiot? Well heres a little piece from this persons inspiring review:
The music in Metroid Prime is awful. The music also gets very tedious after 5 minutes.
I find this hilarious, because the great Omniphagos hints that he loved the Metroid series in his review. What horrible person could write this horrid music that makes the great Omniphagos hate Metroid Primes music? Someone who obviously doesnt know Metroid.
Oh wait What does IGN say in there review???
The Kenji Yamamoto composed soundtrack is every bit as characteristic and pleasing as Super Metroid was before it. For very good reason, too, as Yamamoto was the original composer.
In defense to stupid Omniphagos, your either going to hate the music or enjoy the beats. The music is all in MIDI format, so nothing orchestrated here. Even thou the music is how you would say, barbaric in terms of technology. The beats are addictive; it simply would be a Metroid game without it. There would be something missing without it.
So what have we learned here? The gameplay rocks, the graphics are amazing, and the sound is excellent. Your head will move around listening to it. Oh and we also learned Omniphagos is a moron.
So, what do I find wrong with it. Some cheap boss fights, namely one. I wont name him, but after reading the only way to get rid of the poor bastard was a trick that the developers didnt exactly wanted you to use is not appeasing.
Other than that, there is a ton of replay value. I beat at 66% the first time thru. There is a lot of replay value.
If you have a gamecube, you are damning yourself to hell if you dont own this game.
Go get it now, its not perfect but I havent had this much fun playing a game in a long time.
9/10

Gestahr
My problems with Metroid Prime stemmed from the fact that it was irritatingly long. That Chozo ghost/Chozo artifact shit was pretty stupid. :inot allowed

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Dissing the Gest!
Pathetically!
Actually I was able to find all but three without a walkthru. Now that I think about it, I think that there were too many of them. Did'nt need that many.
