This is true, but then, I don't see the articals being republished either. Not unless the writter intends on selling it elsewhere.

The fact that no one has really expressed interest at this point should be telling of one thing or another. I may or may not express interest when you've got your prices sorted out; also, I think re-using media from a dead site you had nothing to do with is something of a mistake.

Exactly. You would only be buying the right to publish it. If you want exclusive rights to an article, you should be prepared to pay a professional price, because you could gain professional interest. At the very least, be willing to pay a sum equal to the expenses+labor the writer would amount for the work.
After mulling a bit, maybe you should accept volunteered submissions, no payment, just open it up to the entire public. They might lack the quality of a professional writer, but you would get them for free and can claim exclusive rights in a submission agreement. Less paperwork too, like for tax reasons... it would just be easier I think, but no guaranty of quality.
