"Three Big Japanese Players to Form Company Dedicated to Online Gaming!"
By: Bob Blandeburgo
Namco, Square and Enix will team up to develop online games and distribute games overseas in an attempt to cut costs, Reuters reported.
The three companies will set up a joint task force to prepare for the online delivery of game content. "We aim to bring the online game market to life as quickly as possible while looking into various areas to lower our costs through tie-ups," Square President Hisashi Suzuki told a news conference.
Namco and Enix will provide new online game titles for Square's Play Online (POL) service scheduled to take off next March in Japan.
Square is preparing to roll out the new online service next year at the time of its planned release of the online-enabled Final Fantasy XI for PlayStation 2.
The companies expect to set up a combined company to operate POL by the end of this year, Suzuki said.

"First Photos of PS2 Network Adapter and Hard Drive!"
By: Bob Blandeburgo
Sony Computer Entertainment America today released photos of its upcoming PlayStation 2 peripherals, including the network adapter.
The adapter, which includes an Ethernet port as well as a jack for analog phone cords, will sell for $40 this fall. Little is known about the hard drive at this time, but given the fact it is a 40GB drive, don't expect it to come cheap.
The other PS2 accessories shown here are the mouse, keyboard and LCD screen. With the PS2 off to the side of these items, it looks frighteningly similar to a PC, doesn't it? We'll see how close it matches a PC in application this fall.
