I'm sure everyone has seen or played Gran Turismo 3 at least once. Sony used a performance analyzer, and apparently it only taps about 25% of the systems actual power. Just a cool little tidbit.

I wonder what something like MGS2 or J&D would register on that analyzer.

That's the problem with this system, unlike the x-box the PS2's power isn't easy to acces for designers.

And yet it has some of the best games ever made. They're also finding new ways to work with it everyday. Somebody said something once about difficulty being the breeding ground of innovation. Or something. You know.

Edit: I have a tendency to be long-winded.
Does programming difficulty truly bring out innovation, or merely hinder its expression?

It brings out innovation. In trying to find a roundabout way to do things, you find out other things that are useful. That's how it was with the PSX as well(although, not nearly as hard to program for as the PS2).

As I recall, the PSX's relative ease of programming (in comparison to the Saturn) was one of the factors leading to its dominance in the last CW. Now, we have comments from Shinji Mikami saying "PS2 is harder than Saturn, hands down."

True, but graphics isn't everything you know? What's most important in games is the gameplay and storyline. Just like in FF7, the graphics weren't the best cuz the characters arms were almost like twigs a the elbow parts, but the storyline was pretty cool.-Never underestimate stupid people in large numbers. They can do a hell lot more damage than you think.-

the reason why its hard to program for the ps2 is that the ps2 dev kit neva came with any pre-built libraries ( pre-built functions etc to make it easier to program ) so companies were left to make their own libraries in order to make developing games easier.
also another factor is the hardware ... blah blah blah.
