...why I like Final Fantasy VII but not VIII or IX, and why the FFX movies don't do anything for me.
When you think about it, Final Fantasy VII was a lot more...dark? Moody? Gothic?
Sephiroth, the music, the entire city of Midgar, the overwhelming impression of black and white. All these elements sort of came together to create an atmosphere conducive to Gothic nature.
I mean, come on, just take a look at the FMVs of Sephiroth in Cloud's flashback. Or any of the early FMVs, for that matter.
Too much color can ruin a game for me. I hated how childish and marshmallowy FFIX looked...

I always felt FF7 was "darker" than the rest of the FF games. From the first shot of Midgar. But FF9 does have "darker" points to it.

There's definitely FFVIII's Edea and screenshots of the similar Lulu from FFX. They're leaning toward the dark side, no contest, and Lulu actually scares me (she attacks using a dead stuffed Moogle with stitches for eyes.)

But I was thinking about overall game environment, atmosphere. I didn't see any of that in FFIX, with the possible exception of that creepy room of masks in Oeilvert.

I dont know if it is true, but a friend of mine (here I go agian with the rumors...) told me that FFVII was only a test. He told me that square only did it to see ths PSX's potencial. Thats why the first version was not completely ready, they weren't planning to realese it in the first place. But they thought "What the heck?" "Lets make a storyline for this bunch a cool grafics and realese it as FFVII"
It worked!

I dont thik that Square would release a game just to see a systems potential. I no for a fact that its is alot of my friends favorite FF game ever created. Creating a game that so many people view as the best of the series would take more work and then if it was just to test a system. Anyway, if they were planning on testing a system with a crummy storyline and all that stuff, y didnt they make FF9 only for the ps2?

You know what, my dad said exactly the same thing as that about FFIX. He doesn't play FF but he's seen me play VII, VIII and IX. As a non-biased viewer, I guess, he told me he thought VIII looked way more stylish than IX cause IX just looked like a kids' game. Okay, so I was playing chocobo hot and cold at the time he said it....

Yeah, the style of FF8 seemed a it surreal to me, all the technology and stuff. It had a very modern attitude to it, and I still think it was the best and most creative choice for a setting so far in a Final Fantasy game.
